  • RARE! UNIQUE TIFFANY STUDIOS L.C.T. JACK-IN-THE-PULPIT FAVRILE GLASS VASE
    Mar. 16, 2025

RARE! UNIQUE TIFFANY STUDIOS L.C.T. JACK-IN-THE-PULPIT FAVRILE GLASS VASE

    Est: -

RARE! Unique Tiffany Studios L.C.T. Jack-In-The-Pulpit Favrile Glass Vase. Of all the producers of art glass during the final years of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, no one was more imaginative and inventive than Louis Comfort Tiffany. The Jack-in-the-Pulpit Vase is the most desired and rare flower form vase that Tiffany Studios produced. A large vase blown and tooled in favrile glass with pink, purple and turquoise highlights, with hints of blue. The vase is in the form of a stylized open flower, the tall stem rising from a flattened globular base to support a large undulating corolla with the front part pulled down towards the stem and the back raised upward. Makers mark on base, "1901W L.C.T. Favrile". Jack in the pulpit' vases (named after an American wildflower) with their slender, curving stems and large undulating corollas are among the best known examples of glass designed in the Art Nouveau style. Jack in the pulpit vases were made in different sizes and colour combinations. The colours were achieved by dissolving salts of rare metals in molten glass and keeping them in an oxidized state in the kiln to produce chemical reactions. Sometimes, as illustrated in this example, the pieces were also sprayed with chloride, which made the surface to break up into fine lines that picked up the light. Floriform Vase & Converted Kerosene Table Lamp, Manner of L.C. Tiffany

    Est: $200 - $300

Artist/Designer; Manufacturer: Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, 1848-1933), manner of Marking(s); notes: no marking(s) apparent Materials: glass, metal Dimensions (H, W, D): largest overall: 20"h, 6.5"dia Additional Information: Provenance: Private Collection, Ithaca, New York. About the collection: The late collector's wife recalls their first glass purchase in a London antique shop circa 1985, which ignited a 30+ year passion for the genre. The couple and their daughter acquired pieces individually during their travels around Western Europe, Toronto, and New York, and ultimately amassed around 300 vessels and sculptures by artists including Fulvio Bianconi, Toots Zynsky, Carlo Scarpa, Ercole Barovier, Paolo Venini, Vittorio Ferro and others. "My husband became a student of the art he collected," recalls Mrs. N. and their daughter. "With each new artist he admired, he would buy books about them, and the biographies and catalogs became catalysts for acquiring more pieces. He was always looking for variety, and he would seek out individual pieces to round out a segment of the collection. When something caught his eye, he pounced on it, and if he couldn't have that particular piece, he'd search for one like it."

Size: 5 3/4 x 5 3/4 x 12 1/4 in. #8344 #65   Tiffany Favrile glass is a type of iridescent glass developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany in the late 19th century. Tiffany, known for his innovative approach to stained glass, created Favrile glass to achieve unique effects, including vibrant colors, rich textures, and a lustrous, almost metallic sheen. The name "Favrile" itself is derived from an Old English word meaning "handmade," reflecting Tiffany's dedication to craftsmanship. What makes Favrile glass distinctive is its production process. Tiffany infused mineral additives into molten glass, which resulted in a rich, permanent iridescence that could not be rubbed off or replicated by mere surface coating. Unlike many other iridescent glasses that are achieved by applying metallic salts on the surface, Favrile glass’s color and shimmer are integral to the glass itself, giving it a depth and elegance that captivated audiences. The patterns in Favrile glass often take inspiration from nature, featuring motifs of flowers, feathers, and seashells. The glass became popular in jewelry, vases, lamps, and windows, with Tiffany Studios producing some of the most iconic lampshades in Art Nouveau style.
