Bob Timberlake North Carolina, (Born 1937) Study for Aunt Buffs Quilt Limited Edition Lithograph, 969/1000 titled lower left, numbered lower center, pencil signed lower right. From the Archives of askART: In the many articles written about Bob Timberlake—including major pieces in Reader's Digest, Southwest Art, and Audubon—much is made of his meeting with Andrew Wyeth in 1969. At that time the 'old master' thought enough of Timberlake's talent to advise him to drop everything and, "…go home and paint." In fact, for a few years it was fashionable to call Timberlake, "the Andrew Wyeth of the South." However, for those who have followed this artist's development, it is quite obvious that Bob Timberlake's art is unique. Whereas Wyeth's work is starkly realistic, Timberlake's art is evocative of a world which is rapidly disappearing. And although what he paints is definitely American, it is intended to have a universal quality, to return viewers to a former time, to that period in every person's life when things were simpler and quieter. Timberlake pays much attention to light and detail and works with watercolor, tempera and gouache. B orn in Lexington, North Carolina in 1937, Bob Timberlake spent his youth in the rural South. Upon graduation from college, he entered the family business where he remained, painting in his spare time, until he decided to turn his full attention to painting in 1970. In 1973, Timberlake had his first one-man exhibition in New York at the Hammer Galleries. By the time, he already had a large following of loyal collectors, and the show sold out days before the opening night preview. Succeeding shows in 1975 and 1977 were also sold out before the opening night. Timberlake was summoned to the White House to be named by President Carter the official artist for the "Keep America Beautiful" campaign. For this, Timberlake is working on a painting which is to be the national symbol for this very worthy campaign. Also planned is a national "Bob Timberlake Environmental Art Contest," which is to take place in all KAB's 200 participating communities. For this, school age children will submit art portraying the beauty of this country. Eventually fifty State winners will be named, and a national "Bob Timberlake, Keep America Beautiful" exhibition will tour the United States and, quite possibly, Europe.

Bob Timberlake, a native of North Carolina, is one of the most revered artists living in the state. He has been called “the Andrew Wyeth of the South” because of his devotion to realism and a mentorship with Wyeth during his early days of painting. Timberlake’s ability to capture the essence of a rural North Carolina landscape, or the subtleties of a still life with wildflowers, resonates with viewers and has helped him establish a large and loyal following. Timberlake attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a self-taught artist, and he had his first exhibition at the Hammer Galleries, New York in 1973. President Jimmy Carter named Timberlake the official artist for the “Keep America Beautiful” campaign in 1978. He has since received many additional accolades for his contributions to the arts. Timberlake is also a successful furniture maker. In 1990, he launched his collection, The World of Bob Timberlake, a collaboration with Lexington Furniture. Timberlake had designed and built his first dresser at the age of 15, and this lifelong passion for craftsmanship has made The World of Bob Timberlake into the highest selling furniture collection in the industry.
