Xiongquan Ding Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, b. 1929 - d. 2010

Self-taught artist Walasse Ting was born in China in 1929 and immigrated to America in 1958. His abstract oil paintings, created early in his career, were intense and colorful. Walasse Ting paintings often consisted of Chinese calligraphy and swathes of brightly colored acrylics that filled all the white space.

Famous artist Andy Warhol was a friend of his, and he, along with other artists, completed illustrations for a book of poetry Ting wrote. Walasse Ting's paintings and prints show his love of food, life, and popular culture with bold hues and sharp lines. Later in his career, when Ting developed an interest in figural paintings, his pieces included more nudes, specifically, women in dramatic poses. Art lovers can find other rare abstract paintings for sale online and at auction.

Walasse Ting (b. Shanghai 1929, d. New York 2010) Untitled (Two Women), 1950s. Signed: Ding Xiongquan (Walasse Ting) and with the artist's red stamps. Indian ink on paper. The Marders were introduced to Walasse Ting in 1957 by Ilya and Resia Schor, two prominent New York artists and close friends. At the time, Ting had recently arrived in the U.S. from Paris, having fled Communist China. His family was targeted by the communist government, and Ting himself had a price on his head. Ilya Schor encouraged Marder to pay attention to Ting, recognizing him as a talented artist. As a result, Marder purchased a watercolor portrait from Ting depicting two old friends reunited after a long separation. He also assisted the artist by taking him shopping for clothes and offering him a stipend of $100 per month. In 1957 and 1958, the Marders, along with another couple, owned a summer camp, where Ting served as the arts counselor during the summer of 1958. During this time, Ting introduced the Marders to other notable artists, including Sam Francis and Karel Appel. Their friendship lasted from their first meeting until Ting’s death in Amsterdam.

    Est: €1,500 - €1,900

WALASSE TING (Shanghai, China, 1929 - New York, USA, 2010). "Woman in black suspenders". Lithograph, copy 64/200 Hand signed and numbered. Certificate of authenticity attached. Measurements: 71 x 103 cm. Chinese artist and poet Ting studied briefly at the Shanghai Art Academy before leaving China in 1946 to move to Hong Kong, where he exhibited some of his watercolors in a local bookstore. In 1950, he traveled to France and eventually arrived in Paris without money, friends or accommodation. He lived as a bohemian artist for six years, absorbing the artistic styles of the city and exhibiting for the first time pieces in which he introduced characteristics of Western art, based especially on the expressionist movement and the works of Picasso. In 1958 Ting arrived in New York, coinciding with the beginning of a period of apogee for the Abstract Expressionist movement. In contrast to Paris, his work achieved remarkable artistic recognition. His paintings at that time were mainly poetic abstractions influenced by the aesthetic patterns of traditional Chinese artists. It was from the 1970s onward that Ting developed his most distinctive style using Chinese calligraphic brushstrokes to define contours and fill in flat areas of color with brightly colored acrylic paint. After more than 20 years in New York, Ting moved to Amsterdam, where he owned a large studio, where he worked until 2002, when he suffered a serious illness that retired him from the art world, and in 1970 he was awarded the Guggenheim Prize for his drawings. His works are currently represented in important art centers such as the Tate Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum and the Guggenheim in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Hong Kong Museum of Art and other collections around the world.
