At the age of 14 he took his first lessons with David Kohn. He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Rudolf Bacher and Franz Rumpler. In 1918 he was president of the artists' association "New Association"; from 1920 he was a member of the Hagenbund. A long stay in Paris had a great influence on his work. Under the impression of the art of Paul Cézanne, he initially created primarily portraits, genre paintings, and later landscapes and southern French seascapes and dealt with Herbert Boeckl and Oskar Kokoschka. Tischler also portrayed Max Oppenheimer. Tischler returned to France from his American exile in 1949. In 1932 he exhibited the portrait of Mrs. Else Lederer in the exhibition “Austrian Contemporary Portraiture”. and was represented in numerous galleries at home and abroad. Works by Tischler can be found, among others, in the Austrian Gallery Belvedere in Vienna and in the Modern Gallery in Prague.         § Victor Tischler (Austrian, 1890-1951) Greek fishergirl with fish signed upper right "Tischler" pen, ink and watercolour h:28 w:21 cm Victor Tischler was born in Austria and started his training as a painter at fourteen. At the age of seventeen he went to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and completed this course after five years. Here he developed an appreciation for Cezanne, who influenced much of his later work. His early career was characterised by still lifes, portraits and genre paintings which were inspired by his travels to the Netherlands, Italy and France; he later moved to Paris in 1928. His later works depicted mostly landscapes and seascapes, often of the southern coast of France or his native Austria. He died in 1951 in France.

The woman is displayed with short and curly hair and looks up to the sky. She seems to be terrified and holds a hand before her mouth. An animal, apparently in the form of a fur, covers her shoulders. The work is characterized by the fineness of the drawing and the great expressive power. The sheet is matted and mounted in a black wooden frame. It is in good condition, showing light creases and foxing. The frame shows minor chips.         Im Atelier. Öl auf Malpappe, auf Faserplatte kaschiert. 54 x 44,5 cm. Unten links signiert und datiert "V. Tischler 1911". Bereits im Alter von vierzehn Jahren erhielt Viktor Tischler Malunterricht von David Kohn. 1907 bis 1912 studierte er an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien unter Rudolf Bacher und Franz Rumpler. Von 1928 bis 1940 lebte er in Paris, wo er sich insbesondere von den Werken Paul Cezannes inspiriert zeigte und Portraits, Genrebilder und Stilleben schuf. 1941 emigierte der Künstler in die USA, kehrte aber 1949 nach Cannes zurück. In seiner Spätzeit widmete er sich hauptsächlich der Landschaftsmalerei sowie Motiven aus Südfrankreich. Das vorliegende Werk mit der Darstellung eines Malers in seinem Atelier stammt aus der Frühzeit des Künstlers noch während seiner Studienjahre in Wien. Der mit Gemälden angefüllte, durch große Fenster erhellte Raum dürfte eher das Atelier eines bereits etablierten Malerfreundes zeigen als das eines jungen Kunststudenten an der Akademie.
