Tjumpo Tjapanangka - Born: c.1929 deceased 2007 Location: Muruwarr, north of Kiwirkurra Skin: Tjapanangka Language: Kukatja, Pintupi

Mediums: Professional acrylic paint on canvas and linen
Themes: Water, rainmaking, soaks; Wati Kutjarra (Two Men Dreaming); Rainbow snakes; Bandicoot, flying ant, dingo spirit, kangaroo; Tingari

Tjumpo was a senior law man, a maparn (healer) and a respected speaker for his community. He was very fit and strong for his age and he attributed this to his diet of bush food. He spole enthusiastically of his childhood in the desert hunting for goanna, echidna, wallaby, wild cat, and the construction of spinifex and mud shelters for the wet season. He came to Balgo as a result of the local priest, Father Alphonse, sending people out into the bush with supplies of flour, sugar and tea to attract Aboriginal people to the Mission. Shortly afterwards, in 1948, a large group of people came in to live at the Old Mission at Tjumuntora. Tjumpo began painting in 1986.

He was very sociable and loved to meander and chat between painting. An inventive painter, Tjumpo's work varied from monumental works incorporating contrasting visual motifs, to more tightly woven smaller pieces. Tjumpo adapted easily to the process of painting on acetates and his silkscreen is one of the prints featured on this Website.

Tjumpo Tjapanangka - Men's Law Painting - The Great Sandy Desert, 1998

          Est: $4,000 - $6,000

At the time of his death in 2007 (the year this painting was created), Tjumpo Tjapanangka was Balgo’s most venerated male artist and the most highly regarded Law Man in the community. In both his art and his personal demeanour, Tjumpo Tjapanangka affected an infectiously vivacious and animated style. It is this energy and confidence that he employed to build the resonating planes that characterised his finest works and brought such critical acclaim. His wife Ningie Nangala shared his preference for softer colours, and to some extent this aesthetic can be seen in the more recent paintings created by his stepdaughter, Elizabeth Gordon, to whom he passed on a number of his Dreamings. In this work Tjumpo painted Kukurrpungku, close to the large salt lake, Wilkinkarra - Lake Mackay. The orange circles represent “living water”, or permanent water sources. Water pools here after rain, before draining back into sand. The majority of the painting depicts the tali “sand dunes” which dominate the landscape. This was especially important for Tjumpo as several of his family, including his uncle, died at this place.

Marruwa is the general name for this country and is a major Tingarri, or men’s law place. The white shapes represent many lakes found in this country while the red lines depict tali or sandhills.’ Tjumpo was a senior law man and a Maparn (healer), with a very charismatic personality. An indefatigable traveller and a true desert man, Tjumpo spent his childhood hunting in the Gibson Desert and Great Sandy Desert before moving to the Balgo Mission, where he began painting for Warlayirti Artists in 1986. His work was included in the seminal exhibition Art from the Great Sandy Desert at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. While his painting style is true to the Wirrimanu aesthetic, his work also signals the influence of the art movement at Papunya Tula. Marruwa is an exceptional example of Tjumpo’s latest style, painted only one year before his death. The vibrant, bright yellow field with a reticulation of red lines depict a traditional map of the artist’s country, whilst the use of only four primary colours with a black and a white band on either side conveys an effect of striking modernity. A smaller closely related painting from the same year housed in the National Gallery of Victoria collection presents an equivalent yellow and red field as found in the current work. Tjumpo has exhibited widely in Australia and overseas, and his work is held in all major Australian institutions, as well as in many significant foreign institutions.

His early works adhered to the classic style of depicting the travels of the Tingari ancestors by painting interconnected circles, although with a Wirrimanu twist. He went on to develop a structure in his paintings that focuses on the spare arrangement of symbolic elements surrounded by a charged energy field of pulsating lines. His conservative use of colour highlights the key motifs and draws the eye through the composition in the manner of an animated narrative.1 Wati Kutjarra at the Water Site of Mamara, 2000, relates part of the story of the Wati Kutjarra, a prominent Dreaming in the Tanami and the Great Sandy Deserts. The Wati Kutjarra were two ancestral brothers who travelled large areas of the western desert teaching people about food, fire and hunting. This story takes place at the Water Site of Mamara, located far to the south of Balgo towards Wilkinkarra (Lake MacKay), The two brothers travelled to the country of Wilkinkarra before the lake was formed. It was here they lit a large fire, before moving beyond this country. The red lines indicate the intensity of the flames and the yellow and white, the tali (sandhills) which dominate this country. 1.
