NT990787 PROVENANCE Papunya Tula Artists, Alice Springs, Northern Territory Collection of James Smeaton, Melbourne, acquired from the above in 1999 This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Papunya Tula Artists which states: 'This painting depicts designs associated with the rockhole site of Pirmalnga, situated in a large hill, north of the Tjukula Community. In mythological times a large group of Tingari Men camped at this site during their travels north to Pinari, north-west of the Kintore Community. A bird known as Kunkutakuta, a type of owl, also travelled the same route. Since events associated with the Tingari Cycle are of a secret nature no further detail was given. Generally, the Tingari are a group of mythical characters of the Dreaming who travelled over vast stretches of the country, performing rituals and creating and shaping particular sites. The Tingari Men were usually followed by Tingari Women and accompanied by novices and their travels and adventures are enshrined in a number of song cycles. These mythologies form part of the teachings of the post initiatory youths today as well as providing explanations for contemporary customs.' © Nolan Tjapangati/Copyright Agency 2024 This work is located in our Melbourne Gallery

  • Billy Nolan Tjapangati - Tingari Dreaming, 2003
    Oct. 20, 2020

Billy Nolan Tjapangati - Tingari Dreaming, 2003

    Est: $7,000 - $9,000

Born at Nyinna Nyinna near Docker River, Billy grew up traversing the vast reaches of Pintupi territory across the WA border. He came east by donkey in one of the early Pintupi migrations. He had observed the painting group at West Camp for many years before taking up painting himself in the mid ’70s at 30 years of age. The Tingarri song and dance cycles are amongst the most secret and sacred of the deeply religious rituals of the Western Desert tribes of Central Australia. In the Dreamtime a group of old men moved continuously from waterhole to waterhole throughout the Western Desert. They were accompanied by novices and initiated men who were still undergoing ceremonies of instruction at various sites. The song and dance cycles that accompany these rituals consist of hundreds of stanzas and relate the travels and adventures of the Tingarri, their creation of sacred sites and fertility rites, and the significance of their body designs and decorations. In this work Billy Nolan has depicted a series of sites associated with the Tingari in his own personal style.
