        • George Hairbrush Tjungarrayi - Tingari, 2004
          Mar. 05, 2024

George Hairbrush Tjungarrayi - Tingari, 2004

          Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Born near the claypan and soakwater site of Wala Wala in the far reaches of the Western Desert, George Tjungurrayi began painting around 1976 after encouragement from Nosepeg Tjupurrula. Over the following decade he worked intermittently at Yayayi and Mount Liebig, and also Walungurru. His works, created during the 1970s and throughout the 1980s, were characterized by the ubiquitous dotted grids of lines and circles common to the Tingari imagery created by his Pintupi clansmen relating to significant sites including his birthplace Wala Wala, and the surrounding region. His reductive, linear works first appeared in the mid 1990s. While it may be challenging to reconcile these contemporary images with their traditional content, the overall shimmer he effects with seemingly minimal application radiates the artist's authority and self-assuredness.

          Mar. 05, 2024

George Ward Tjungarrayi - Soakage Water of Kirrimalunya, 2005

          Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Although they were born of different mothers, George Ward shared the same father with Yala Yala Gibbs and Willy Tjungarrayi. They arrived in Papunya in the early 1960s while still in their teenage years. He began to paint in 1976, assisting senior artists. The creation of large scale works during these early years of the Western Desert art movement involved many men at various levels of responsibility. For the younger ones, like George, it was an apprenticeship in the skills, knowledge and cultural obligations required for the artistic vocation and for eventual ceremonial leadership within his tribal area. Though he was reputed to have completed several canvases during the early 1980s, he did not begin painting in earnest until after the death of his brother Yala Yala Gibbs in 1998. He rapidly developed his own style based on men’s designs used to adorn ceremonial artifacts including dance regalia with their mesmeric interlocking geometric and parallel linear patterning.

          George (Hairbrush) Tjungarrayi - Tingari, c. 2001

          Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Born near the claypan and soakwater site of Wala Wala in the far reaches of the Western Desert, George Tjungurrayi began painting around 1976 after encouragement from Nosepeg Tjupurrula. His preoccupation from the outset had been the ceremonial activities and men’s stories associated with the travels of the Tingari ancestors as they relate to his most significant sites including his birthplace Wala Wala, and the region surrounding Kiwirrkura, Lake Mackay, Kulkuta, Karku, Ngaluwinyamana, and Kilpinya to the north-west of Kintore. His reductive, linear works first appeared in the mid 1990s. While it may be challenging to reconcile these contemporary images with their traditional content, the overall shimmer he effects with seemingly minimal application radiates the artist's authority and self-assuredness.

George Ward Tjungarrayi - Tingari, 2004

          Est: $10,000 - $15,000

George Ward arrived in Papunya in the early 1960s while still in his teenage years and worked as a fencer and butcher in the community kitchen. Although born to different mothers, he shared the same father with Yala Yala Gibbs and Willy Tjunurrayai, and when he began to paint in 1976, he assisted these senior artists who worked within the tightly knit group of established Pintupi painters. Though he was reputed to have completed several canvases during the early 1980s, George Ward did not begin painting in earnest until after the death of his brother Yala Yala Gibbs in 1998. Thereafter, he rapidly developed his own style based on the men’s key designs used to incise ceremonial artefacts, including dance regalia, with their mesmeric interlocking geometric and parallel linear patterning. This painting depicts designs associated with the site of Kaakuratintja (Lake McDonald). In mythological times, a Tingari man visited this site before travelling west to Patantja. As he travelled, he carried two Kuniya (pythons) with him. One large venomous snake also travelled west from Lake McDonald. According to Pintupi mythology, the Tingari travelled over vast stretches of the country, performing rituals and creating and shaping particular sites during the Dreamtime.

          Est: $25,000 - $35,000

This work is based on the Tingari men’s site in his country, west of Kintore. In mythological times, a large group of Tingari men came to this site. They performed ceremonies, singing the songs and performing the dances associated with this area. Here, an old Tingari man of the Tjapaljarri kinship subsection was said to have camped at the claypan and soakage water site Mamultjulkunya. These mythical Tingari characters travelled over vast stretches of the country, performing rituals and creating and shaping particular sites. The Tingari men were usually accompanied by novices and followed by the Tingari women. Their travels and adventures are enshrined in a number of song cycles. These mythologies form part of the teachings for post-initiation youths today, as well as providing explanations for contemporary customs. George Tjungarrayi gained a growing reputation from the mid 1990s as the emerging contemporary art market showed its preference for painterliness and a degree of abstraction. He is now considered amongst the most accomplished of all Pintupi male painters.
