          Oct. 20, 2020

          Johnny Warnangkula Tjupurrula - Men's Ceremony, 1999

          Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Born in the far reaches of the Western Desert, Johnny Warangkula encountered the outside world at just 12 years of age. Within three years his family moved in to Hermannsburg mission where he went through initiation and moved to Papunya shortly after its establishment. At the time of Geoff Bardon’s arrival in 1971 he was serving on the Papunya Council alongside Mick Namarari. Johnny Warangkula was quick to express interest in painting and rapidly developed a distinctive style characterised by layering and over-dotting, He was amongst the most inventive of the early Papunya artists and was foremost amongst those who fundamentally shaped the Papunya art movement. However by the mid 1980s his eyesight began to fail and his painting became infrequent. By the end of the 1990s Warangkula was old and relatively infirm. Yet even at this late stage he was capable of creating raw expressionistic paintings such as this fine example. The finest of Johnny Waralgkula’s works continue to inspire. Over his thirty-year career, he was a distinctive figure, always wearing his stockman’s hat and charming visitors with his enigmatic but sincere personality. He was oblivious to the attractions of life beyond the power and responsibilities of his Dreamings. Yet his best paintings not only reverberate with the power of ancient knowledge and forms, but they continue to captivate Western audiences through their uncanny access to our modern sensibility.

In mythological times a large group of Tingari Men came from the west and passed through this site during their travels to Lake Mackay. Since events associated with the Tingari Cycle are of a secret nature no further detail was given. Generally, the Tingari are a group of mythical characters of the Dreaming who travelled over vast stretches of the country, performing rituals and creating and shaping particular sites. The Tingari Men were usually followed by Tingari Women and accompanied by novices and their travels and adventures are enshrined in a number of song cycles. These mythologies form part of the teachings of the post initiatory youths today as well as providing explanations for contemporary customs.

This particularly fine example, painted towards the end of the first, golden era of the Papunya acrylic painting movement in August 1973, features two women’s camps in luxuriant fields of bush tucker nourished by the rains created by the ancestor beings. The artist is renowned for his early paintings of Rain and Water Dreamings set in his traditional lands around the sites of Kalipinypa, Tjikari and Ilpilli. These paintings shimmer with patchworks of overlapping dots and stippling to suggest the ancestral forces that created the landscape and the richness of edible resources that abound across the country. Kampurarrpa (Kampurrula) is a site close to Ilpilli in the Ehrenberg Ranges where Warangkula established a camp in the early days of the outstation movement following the enactment of the Northern Territory Land Rights legislation in 1976. The painting shows two camps; the women, symbolised by the double-U forms either side of a set of concentric circles, are identified by their equipment–digging sticks and oval carrying dishes. Their footprints, leaving and returning to the camps suggest a series of foraging and collecting expeditions; they also mark the choreography of ceremony. The set of roundels that run vertically through the composition are likely to represent waterholes, and the continuous lines that weave around these relate to one of the graphic symbols for rain that permeate Warangkula’s paintings: see for example, Water and bush tucker Dreaming, 1972, and Water and bush tucker story, 1972.1 The red lines that meander laterally and diagonally across the picture plane may suggest a form of vine (ngalyipi) woven by ancestral women into ceremonial paraphernalia. Women Camped at Kampurrula relates to one of the first monumental canvases to be painted at Papunya, a year later in 1974– Warangkula’s Kampurarrpa in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria2 which also features two women’s camps. 1. see Ryan, J. and P. Fire was used to promote a mosaic of vegetation types, on which the wallabies were dependent, and fire was again deployed by the Pintupi to flush Mala from cover, so hunters could dispatch the wallabies as they fled.1 Johnny Warangula was intimately associated with the Mala ancestors. He inherited custodianship of the Dreaming from his father and grandfather, who were born at Tjikarri, a rocky outcrop in the heart of Mala country, east of Wilkinkarra (Lake MacKay). There are two distinct narratives associated with Tjikarri: one involves the Nananana men hunting Mala with fire (in the fashion outlined above), while the other concerns the journey of an old sorcerer, Lurnpa, the Red-backed Kingfisher (Todiramphus pyrrhopygius), who, with the aid of a Mala horde, pursues a giant dingo-like creature, Matinpilangu. 1 Geoffrey Bardon verified that Mala (Rufous Hare Wallaby) Dreaming is Warangula’s first painting, created in the Western Desert idiom at Papunya in 1971. Moreover, he confirmed that the painting depicts the Mala Dreaming at Tjikarri.2 Produced before Warangula developed his characteristic over-dotting style, the current painting provides an iconographic representation of ceremonial ground and the movements of performers as they reenact the deeds of the Mala ancestors. The central motif provides a planar view of the ceremonial area, with figures (U-shapes) seated around an attenuated performance area. The tracks of Mala ancestors are described on either side of the motif, moving from the bottom to the top of the board. Instrumentally, the tracks on either side of the central motif are subtly different. 1 The leftmost track shows a Mala ancestor moving slowly, dragging its tail (straight line) and using its front paws (E-shapes) for support, as it lifts its large rear legs in the typical mode of Australian macropods (as indicated by V-shaped footprints). The movement of the Mala ancestor on the right is more distinct. As the animal approaches the concentric circle, it rests one clenched paw on the ground, (to look around?), then placing both front paws on the earth on the rim of the roundel (as if to drink). The Mala then hops over the circle, resting its front right paw on the ground again (to check the scene?) before continuing. In the ceremonial context, elaborately decorated performers re-enact the actions of the Mala ancestors. 1 The hardboard, which supports the Mala (Rufous Hare Wallaby) Dreaming, is made of salvaged materials used in the first months of painting at Papunya. The board’s familiar materiality is enhanced by the presence of a previous painting, evident below the yellow ochre background. The excitement that came with the revelation of distant sites and ceremonies is palpable in the directness of Warangula’s attack. 1 1. While they were widespread in Warangula’s youth, Mala are now extinct in mainland Australia, having been adversely affected by changes to the fire regime in combination with depredation by introduced animals, notably the Red Fox. The last mainland Mala was sighted in the Tanami Desert in 1991. 2. Geoffrey Bardon, ‘Lot 13’, in Fine Art Paintings, 10 August 1998, Melbourne, Deutscher-Menzies, p. 24. 1 JOHN KEAN
