        Est: $800 - $1,200

Liza Todd-Tivey (Born 1957) Nashua and Clem 1982 This two-color patinated bronze sculpture numbered 18 from an edition of 75 is a smaller version of the life-sized original at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Kentucky where Nashua stood at stud for decades following his retirement from thoroughbred racing. His groom of thirty years, Clem Brooks, was a celebrity there in his own rite. The two are depicted here well-sculpted and in various colors of patinated bronze. Nashua was the leading thoroughbred money-winner of his time, earning more than $1.1 million in three years of racing during the mid-1950s. The sculptor Liza Todd-Tivey is a well-known New York artist specializing in and famous for Equestrian sculpture. Measures 12.5 x 16 x 12 inches. Est: £600 - £900

λ Liza Todd-Tivey (British b. 1957), Nashua and Clem, a colour patinated bronze group of a racehorse and groom, naturalistically modelled and mounted to a circular stained wood base inset with metal plaque, 31cm high, 39cm wideProvenance:Private Collection of Nick Robinson, founder of Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds, a pioneer of shared racehorse ownership in the 1980's and esteemed publisher of horseracing books and magazines.Animal sculptor Liza Todd-Tivey has portrayed the American thoroughbred alongside his groom of 26 years, Clem Brooks. This strikingly intimate and informal portrayal is the result of a 1982 commemorative commission on larger scale by Leslie Combs II, founder of Spendtrifth Farm, Kentucky, where Nashua spent his final years. Spendthrift Farm allowed casting of a limited edition of 75 bronzes on a smaller scale, such as the one presented here. Todd-Tivey has completed many private commissions of wildlife sculpture and other race horses (including models of Seattle Slew and the Canadian stallion Northern Dancer, casts of which are also included in this collection), and is the daughter of iconic actress Elizabeth Taylor and producer Mike Todd. Alongside John Skeaping, she was the only modern sculptor to be included in John Fairley's influential book, Great Racehorses in Art, first published in 1984.

        LIZA TODD-TIVEY - NASHUA & CLEM

        Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Liza Todd-Tivey American, b. 1957 Nashua & Clem Bronze Signed, dated '82, edition 7/75 Upon Nashua’s death in 1982, Leslie Combs II commissioned Liza Todd-Tivey for a half-scale statue of the stallion being led by his groom, Clem Brooks. This lot is a smaller version of the original at Spendthrift. While many fans came to visit Nashua when he stood at the farm, Brooks inevitably became a favorite too. An often-told story relates that many admirers would ask Brooks for Nashua souvenirs, and he would always oblige by pulling a horseshoe that he said was “off Nashua” out of his pocket to sell them. What the fans never knew was that Brooks would rummage around after the blacksmith departed and pick up any horseshoes he could find. Covering his bases, the clever Brooks always said they were “off” Nashua, never “on,” and that was true, as Nashua was not wearing them. In the bronze offered here, you can see the outline of a horseshoe in Brooks’ right pocket.
