Ida Bagus Made Togog Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1913 - d. 1989

Ida Bagus Made Togog (1913–1989) was born into a noble Brahmana clan in the center of Batuan. Together with I Ngendon, he was one of the foremost painters from Batuan. Unlike Ngendon, Togog was not particularly interested in Western ideas. He was comfortable with the Balinese way of life and adhered closely to the Balinese belief system. As a member of the high priest family, Togog was very familiar with Balinese lontar (religious literature) and Balinese myths and folklore. His works were primarily drawn from religion and local myths from an insider's view point and he narrates them through his drawings, just like in the Wayang tradition. The strength of his drawings was neither his draftsmanship nor composition, but his narration of complex religious beliefs and the united life in Bali as a balance between the macrocosm and microcosm, between the benevolent and good spirits. According to Wim Bakker, it was the Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet, who inspired him to translate images in Balinese lontars into drawings. During 1936 to 1938, he was befriended by Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead and produced 83 paintings for them. As Bateson and Mead went to Bali to do research on Balinese character, they requested Togog to give an expression of his dreams. He produced a large number of drawings on dreams and his own interpretation in the context of Balinese beliefs as he understood it.

His works can be found in Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam and in the Rudolf Bonnet collection at the Ethnography Museum in Leiden, the Netherlands. In Bali, his can be viewed at the Puri Lukisan Museum and the Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) in Ubud, Bali.

Ide Bagus Made Togog Batuan, and further on, Sukawati. Ide (phonetic spelling for Ida) Bagus Made Togog was originally from Batuan (1913-1985 or 1989). In black and gray paint a story from the Middle Javanese Kidung Tantri is depicted. It is about the heron who warns the fish and other inhabitants of a lake: soon there will be no more water. He offers to save the fish by taking them to another lake. At that moment he takes a fish in his beak, but eats the animal further on. Then he comes for the next victim. A crab realizes that something is wrong and offers to be transported. Arriving at the other lake, he pinches the neck of the bird with his pincers, so that it dies. Lower left: the heron stands at the lake where fish are swimming around. Upper left: the heron, covered with fish, flies away in the sky. Upper right: at the lake, the crab offers to be rescued too, the heron holds it with its talons. Lower right: arrived at the other lake, the crab grabs the heron by the neck with its pincers in order to kill the bird. Provenance: -Collection Dr. Hedi Hinzler, Leiden, the Netherlands.

4000, Ida Bagus Made Togog (1913-1989), A story from the old Javanese Tantri Kamandaka: The turtle and the geese, tempera on canvas, mounted on board, 64x48,5 cm, This unsigned painting was made by Ida Bagus Made Togog, from Batuan, in Gianyar, born 1911-died 2 February 1989. A story from the old Javanese Tantri Kamandaka is painted. At the bottom left is a small lake, in which a turtle lives. He is friends with a couple of geese, Cakrangga and his wife Cankranggi. He complains about the drought. The geese promise that they can take him to a better place in the Himalayas where there is a large lake. The geese have a stick. They will take the ends in their mouths and the turtle has to take the middle of its mouth and especially not start talking when they are flying. The turtle follows the advice. Then there is flying. They fly over a field and are spotted by a jackal couple. The female says: 'Look how a tortoise can fly through geese'. Then the little man says: 'What you say is wrong, it is a cow pie that they take for their goose cubs'. The turtle feels offended and becomes angry, he opens his mouth to say something, but falls down. Then he is eaten by the jackals. In the story it is about a turtle couple, but in the drawing only one turtle is shown. Provenance: -Collection Dr Hedi Hinzler, Leiden, the Netherlands.

4000, Ida Bagus Made Togog (1913-1989), A jungle with various trees and animals, among which an elephant jumping down, tempera, mounted on board, 64x48,5 cm, signed and annotated 'ID. BGS. MD. / Togog..Batuan' (lower centre), A signed painting from the artist Ida Bagus Made from Batuan, in Gianyar. This painting depicts a jungle with various trees and animals. Monkeys, birds, snakes, frogs and an elephant jumping down. It is possible that a Tantri story has been depicted, but so far no link to such a story has been found. Ida Bagus Made Togog (circa 1913 - 1989) was the favorite painter of the legendary anthropologists Bateson and Mead. During their field research in Bali from 1936 to 1937, they collected many black and white drawings, most of which were commissioned to depict Balinese dreams: an attempt to uncover the subconscious Balinese psyche, fears, and angst. Although, during the Pitamaha period (circa 1936 - 1942), Togog had begun working with color, it was not until the mid to late 1940s, that Togog painted in colour regularly. Presented here are six postwar paintings by Ida Bagus Togog. They originated from a single collection developed during the late 1940s to 1970s. All of them are coloured except for one large painting in black and white (lot 68). Four of the six paintings (Lots 61,62,64 and 66) are based on the Tantric (fable) stories. One large work depicts a cremation ceremony (lot 63). Another work (lot 65) is probably taken from the old Javanese story about the churning of the Mountain Mandaragiri to obtain an elixir liquid: both the gods and the inhabitants of the underworld work together in the search of immortality. The most interesting piece of the six works by Ida Bagus Made Togog is a large (88x137cm) black and white composition (lot 66). It tells the story of a herron pretending to be a high priest (Pendada Baka) in order to trick the fish, but instead they meet their fate in the mouth of the heron. Ida Bagus Made Togog (Geria Ageng, Batuan, 1913-1989)

    Est: $6,600 - $8,800

The Witch-Queen Rangda Grants a Boon Wash technique and watercolour on paper, framed and glazed. 47 x 36 cm. The artist was a member of the Pita Maha artists' association. Along with Ngendon, Togog is regarded a leader in the group of Batuan painters and among the first to learn to paint, about two and a half years before Bateson & Mead arrived. He had painted designs on dancers' costumes and knew how to write classical Balinese on palm-leaf manuscripts ( lontar ). He was also a ritual specialist. Togog often visited Spies and Bonnet to see them at work. Togog assisted Bateson in checking the attributions of the paintings. Bateson and Mead collected eighty-three pictures by the artist (Geertz, op.cit. p.114). Inscribed with the artist's name by Rudolf Bonnet on the reverse. See also the List of Exhibitions in this catalogue. PROVENANCE Dr. F. Bonne, Amsterdam (Dr. Bonne was a scientific researcher at the Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen, Amsterdam).

  • Ida Bagus Ketut Togog (Geria Pacung, Batuan, 1924-1984)

Ida Bagus Ketut Togog (Geria Pacung, Batuan, 1924-1984)

    Est: $1,375 - $2,200

Bathing by a Well Wash technique on paper, pencil and black ink framing lines, framed and glazed. 23.5 x 23.5 cm. The artist was a favourite of the Swiss painter Theo Meier and the Swiss pharmicist Dr. Ernst Schlager. A substantial collection of his work from the Schlager collection is now held at the Museum der Kulturen at Basel, Switzerland. Ketut Togog was one of very few painters who continued to paint during the war since both his clients, who were Swiss, were not affected by the war other than that they were unable to leave Bali. Dr. A. Vickers, Sydney kindly confirmed the attribution, not to be confused with Ida Bagus Made Togog (Geria Ageng, Batuan 1913-1989).
