    Est: - $1,800

Work on paper. Digital Photo C/Print, 14" x 11". Framed. With History’s permission), 1996 Most of the emblematic images of Fidel Castro and the rebels during the revolution were in reality recreations made later with fashion photographers, to propagate more attractive historical images. By resetting and recreating those same images, using his friends and students from the Superior Art Institute, Toirac puts in evidence that history has ceased to be linear, becoming a cyclical and magical process perpetuating that moment.

En el Teatro (In the Theatre) This artwork is part of a series of fake drawings of Eduardo Abela, based on Abela's newspaper comics, which Toirac purchased in the black market. Toirac signed them, as to validate that the message behind Abela's original comics are still valid today. In these works the titles have a significant relationship with the meaning of the original comic; this specific work makes a humorous reference to freedom of expression.

  • Jose Toirac, Exposicion 1889-2006
    Aug. 23, 2020

    Jose Toirac, Exposicion 1889-2006

    Est: - $1,500

3D Work. Mixed Media, 15" x 23.75" x 2.5". Framed. CUBA 1869-2006 This piece illustrates Toirac's original "Cuba - 1869-2006" of 2007, which consisted of all the Presidents of the new Cuban Republic, starting with the first, Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, and ending with Raul Castro (president at the time that the work was made). The original work was censored by the Ministry of Culture of Cuba on the basis that "you cannot have good and bad people together in the same room"; another problem, however, was the presence of a nail on the wall, after the portrait of Raul Castro, which suggested an open question about the president who would follow, as well as the future of Cuba.

    Jose Toirac, Orbis

    Est: - $6,000

3D Work. Mixed Media, 22.5" x 16.5" x 3". Orbis, A Tribute To Walker Evans This piece is made with acrylic on wood, laminated in gold leaf. It is part of a series of pieces exhibited at the National Museum of Havana. The show recreated in this medium many of the photographs taken by the American photographer Walker Evans during his trip to Cuba of 1933, to document the miserable conditions of the Cuban people. This specific piece refers to a cue of simple people, a customary problem in Cuba to obtain anything necessary for everyday life - a condition still present today: the artist infers that nothing has changed between one dictator of the right and the other of the left. The original photo was first published in the book "The Crime of Cuba" (1934), a copy of which has been made a part of this piece.

Jose Toirac, Solve et Coagula (ceramic plates)

    Est: - $500

3D Works. Ceramic, 0" x 0". Twelve unique ceramic dishes, each printed with different fragments of corroded chains from the monument to the Victims of the USS Maine in Havana, Cuba. / Titled dated and signed in verso: "Solve et Coagula" 2012 M&T. Group of 11 black ceramic plates- part of an installation (were 12 but one broke in transit) Unique piece from a set of 12. The others are available for purchase at the same price as the winning bid. From the Series Solve et Coagula The series of 12 euqal-si9ze plates are part of the installation "Solve et Coagula", based on the historical event of the explosion of the Maine, an American battleship which was anchored in the Havana harbor during the Spanish-American war, in 1898. This piece is related to the historical love-hate relationship between Cuba and the United States, and specifically to the political antagonism after the 1959 revolution. The photo printed on each ceramic plate was taken by the artist at the monument to the Maine located almost in front of the American embassy in Havana. The monument was unveiled in 1925 and two original cannons and an anchor chain from the battleship were part of it. Toirac's artwork also signifies the conversion of patriotic relics of war into souvenirs and merchandise.
