Constatati gli stretti legami tra Gerrit Dou e la famiglia Van Tol, si presume che Dou sia stato l'insegnante di Dominicus, elemento che si desume dal medesimo stile pittorico ma di cui non ci sono documenti certi che approvino questa teoria. Van Tol diventò membro della Gilda di San Luca nel 1664. In seguito, scelse Utrecht e poi Amsterdam come luoghi di residenza, e lavorò barcamenandosi tra la ricerca di commissioni ed eventi traumatici come l’invasione francese delle terre olandesi del 1672. Oil on canvas; laid down on panel Holland, around 1670 Attributed to Dominicus van Tol (c.1635-1676) - Dutch genre painter The attribution of the unsigned work was supported by the art historian Karl Koetschau (1868-1949) due to the selected subject and it's stylistic interpretation Dimensions: 40.5 x 35.8 cm Provenance: Private collection, France; Lempertz, Cologne, 1994, A701, Lot 467 Good condition Portrait of a scholar painted in the tradition of classical memento mori compositions . The present portrait is attributed to the Dutch master Dominicus van Tol and shows an old man dressed in fur and sitting at a table, which is covered with books, a globe, a skull, an hourglass and further utensils used by a professor. The composition corresponds to the typical memento mori iconography, which should remind people of the inevitability of death. In the Middle Ages these motifs were very popular in painting and characteristically appeared in Kunstkammer collections. The canvas is laid down on panel and has been cut along the edges. The panel shows a vertical tear along the center, which is slightly visible in the depiction. The paint surface reveals light areas of craquelure and small slightly lifted parts. Inspection under UV light reveals minimal retouching, especially to the edges and the pushed through tear. The panel measures 40.5 x 35.8 cm and the framed overall dimensions are 54 x 49 cm. Dominicus van Tol (c.1635-1676) The Dutch painter Dominicus Van Tol was born in Bodegraven and became a pupil and follower of his uncle Gerrit Dou (1613-1675). In 1664 he attended the artist's Guild in Leiden and two years later also in Amsterdam. He spent the last years of his life in Leiden, where he additionally established a tavern. Examples of his artistic output are included, for instance, in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and in the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden.
