    Feb. 23, 2023

Leo Tolstoy. War and Peace, Specially Bound Presentation Copy for Gregory Peck f

    Est: $500 - $700

Leo Tolstoy.  War and Peace , Specially Bound Presentation Copy for Gregory Peck from Robert E. Sherwood, Fred Zinnemann, and Michael Todd. New York: Simon and Schuster. 1954. lxii, 1381 pages, Octavo. Presentation copy gifted to Gregory Peck by the producer Michael Todd, director Fred Zinnemann, and playwright Robert E. Sherwood, likely as an overture to offer him a role in their never-produced film adaptation of the novel. Tan leatherette-covered boards with front board stamped "To / Gregory peck / ...with our Compliments. / Robert E. Sherwood / Fred Zinnemann / Michael Todd." Sherwood had a printed inscription bound-in at the front end paper, "I started reading this book in 1923 and finished it in 1943, when another would-be world conqueror was bogged down and beaten in the Russian winter. There is material here for hundreds of motion pictures; the problem confronting Mike Todd, Fred Zinnemann and me is to determine which is the best and the most faithful to the immortal spirit of Tolstoi. / Robert E. Sherwood." Inner Sanctum Edition, translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude, with a Foreword by Clifton Fadiman. Published at a time when Moscow and all Russia were threatened by German invaders, this edition provides rich documentation of Napoleon's 1812 invasion, treating the novel as history rather than literature. Hardcover; lxii, 1361, [11] pages, maps, together with readers guide pamphlet in rear inner cover paper pocket. Light wear, with vertical creases along the spine. Light wear, scuffs, and rubbing to the binding. There was a tremendous rush to adapt War and Peace into a film in the mid-1950s, with several versions going into development simultaneously. The Italian producers Dino de Laurentiis and Carlo Ponti announced their adaptation in October of 1954, legendary producer David O. Selznick was working on a treatment, and Mike Todd announced that he, too, would be pursuing his own version, which would be filmed with the cooperation of the Yugoslavian army. (The New York Times) The project, which had Sherwood attached as screenwriter and Zinnemann as director, ultimately fell through when Todd decided to instead focus on his adaptation of Around the World in Eighty Days. • TOLSTOY, LEO
    Jun. 17, 2010

    TOLSTOY, LEO

    Est: $7,000 - $10,000

TOLSTOY, LEO A fine letter from Tolstoy to Mme Guervich, publisher of the influential literary journal, The Northern Herald . Although Tolstoy was fond of Mme Guervich and allowed her to publish several of his stories, Countess Tolstoy was extremely jealous and accused her of being Tolstoy's mistress. The countess referred to Mme Guervich as a "half-Jewish witch" and in 1895 fought bitterly with Tolstoy over her, husband and wife both running out into the street partially clothed to continue their argument in the heavy snowdrifts. In this letter, Tolstoy comments on an unpleasant scene involving a young man turned out of Mme Guervich's apartment: "I am happy for you, that you behaved well and in God's cause .... You say that you are afraid of boasting on his part, and of slander, and I greatly regret that this matter cannot be publicized as loudly as possible and made known everywhere. People would only feel sorry for him, this unfortunate, erring youth, who, having acted in the basest manner, was sure that he was acting nobly. (I say was because I am certain that even before he had left your apartment, his conscience had begun to trouble him.) This matter cannot be publicized only because you do not want it and because publicizing it would be self-praise, destroying the dignity of you action, which lies in its humility. This incident is all the more precious because it involved a woman. Because of the absurdity still inherent in our mores, a man would have been reproached as being weak if he had not defended himself, but for a woman there is nothing else to be done but to call upon men to defend her, with force against force, or to bear all not calmly, yet happily, something which in our course customs is considered to be a degradation .... I am very, very happy for you." Not in R.F. Christian's edition of Tolstoy's letters; possibly unpublished.

"LES GUERRES NE PEUVENT ÊTRE ABOLIES QUE PAR LES INDIVIDUS QUI EN SOUFFRENT...." Letter Signed ("Léon Tolstoy"), 5 pp recto and verso, 4to (conjoined leaves), Toula, Russia, July 10-23, 1901, to "Mon Prince," Prince Mirza Reza Khan Arfa'ed-Dowleh, in French, inconspicuous punch-holes in top margin, folds just starting, still fine. Fine, lengthy letter in which Tolstoy outlines his moral philosophy and anarchic pacifism. His correspondent is Prince Arfa of Persia, a nation often at war with Russia and soon to face its own revolution. In part, translated: "I am very grateful to you for sending your poem. It is of the highest interest and I think that the propagation of the ideas it contains will be very useful not only for the Persian people, but for men of all continents. ... I do not completely agree with you about the fraternity that you suppose possible between the states and their leaders. I believe that the state, formed and always sustained by violence, not only excludes fraternity, but is completely its opposite. / If men are brothers, there can be neither emperor, nor minister, nor general, nor subject, nor soldier. Between brothers, no one can have the right to lead, nor the obligation to obey. Everyone must obey God and not men, whose orders most often are contrary to the law of God. In my opinion wars will end only when each individual is so imbued with the religious principle to not do onto others what he does not want done onto himself that no one will be able to accept the obligation of military service ... Wars can be abolished only by the individuals who suffer from them. They will be abolished only when true religion is diffused to such an extent that the majority of men will be ready to endure violence rather than to use it...." See illustration.

    TOLSTOY, LEO

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Autograph letter signed, 4 pages (6 x 4 in.; 154 x 101 mm), on grid paper with perforations at head, possibly torn from a notebook, in Russian, [no place], 6 November 1908, to Roman Stanislavovich, warning him about love; half brown morocco folding case with morocco gilt spine label, translation lining inside of folding case LITERATURE Tolstoy: Complete Works, 1956, Volume 78, letter 277. NOTE Being in love is a harmful emotion. Tolstoy explains to his correspondent that being "in love" is a harmful emotion which is always painful in its consequences, and it is commonly and wrongly perceived as the same as "love": " . . . love is only love when it is selfless and does not seek its own satisfaction. Such a love one can feel for one's wife without its being in any way simulated, and this emotion will give you true happiness . . ." He warns Stanislavovich that surrendering to his feelings will only lead to a lowering of his moral standards and to all the sufferings which will inevitably follow.

    Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Two autograph letters signed ("L. Tolstoy"), in English, to John Bellows, with a cabinet size photograph of him in his peasant's smock Condition Note: 4 pages, 8vo, one with envelope, Yasnaya Poliana, 12 December 1892 and 15/26 May [1893], one letter foxed, framed and glazed thanking him for the gift of a book which contains much to interest him, particularly on the way the Holy Spirit forms the foundation of "all what we can know of God and of his will" and expressing the wish that it could be available in Russian, adding that he entirely concurs with Bellows's view that one should distinguish between one's own will and the will of God, and referring to his latest book ("I am only ashamed that I did not say all what I try to say in this book long time before...").
