    Est: €2,000 - €3,000

Luis Tomasello (1915-2014) Untitled Acrylic on wood, 56 x 56cm Internationally renowned in the Kinetic and Optical Art movements, Argentinian artist Luis Tomasello is best known for his incandescent pieces that combine printmaking, sculpture and painting to create atmospheric abstractions. The son of an Italian house painter and bricklayer, Tomasello learned the craft of construction early on, applying childhood skills to his early work alongside painters like Emilio Pettoruti and Carmelo Arden Quin, two key artists in the Argentine avant-garde. Tomasello began working with geometric abstraction after a trip to Europe in 1945, and after engaging with a large group of Latin American kinetic artists working in France, he relocated permanently to Paris in 1951. Like many of the artists creating constructivist abstract work in the mid-1950s, Tomasello soon shifted into Optical Art, a movement that would ultimately culminate in a project Tomasello refers to as Atmospheres chromoplastiques. The pieces are usually comprised of constructed or rendered white shapesÑcubes, tetragons and trianglesÑpositioned on a white background to reflect florescent colors on the underside. In addition to exhibiting internationally, Tomasello has created a number of large-scale public art commissions in France, Argentina, Mexico, and the United States.

LUIS TOMASELLO (*La Plata, Argentina 1915 - Paris, 2014). "Atmosphere Chromo- Plastique Nª 883". Collage of polychrome wood. Multiple. Exemplar 18/50. Presents stamps on the back of MACLA (Museum of Contemporary Latin American Art). Measurements: 43 x 43 cm. This work belongs to the series of the same name, where the artist Luis Tomasello explores optical illusions and geometric structures, placing cubes on a white background generating unique light and shadow games. Tomasello manages to unite the language of painting and sculpture in these works. Luis Tomasello entered the Prilidiano Peyredon National School of Fine Arts in 1932. From 1940 to 1944 he continued his studies at the Ernesto de la Carcova School of Painting in Buenos Aires and worked in figuration until 1950. In 1945 he made his first stay in Europe and approached geometric abstraction. In 1951, Tomasello made his first trip to Europe and arrived in Sicily to visit the land of his father. He discovered the work of Mondrian. Finally, he spent six months in Paris. He discovers the medieval stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral and has for the first time the intuition of color-light, which will be decisive in his work. After his definitive installation in Paris in 1957, Luis Tomasello carried out his first kinetic experiments on the plane, working with Marino di Teana. The following year the first reliefs appeared where, as a pioneer, the artist integrated the effects of color reflection. In 1958 he joined the Galerie Denise René group and since then has continued to develop a body of work entirely focused on the problems of light. Numerous solo exhibitions have been devoted to him throughout the world. Most notably, in 1976, a major retrospective at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and, more recently, in 1985, another at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid. Continuing with the plastic research born at the beginning of this century and commonly called "geometric abstract art" or "constructivism", Tomasello is part of this group of so-called kinetic creators who, in the 1950s, wanted to integrate movement in their works. They implemented either virtual movement by multiplying perspectives and other optical illusions (Op Art), or real movement produced by mechanical, electrical or natural forces such as wind. Tomasello explored the effects obtained by the reflection of light in vibrant three-dimensional compositions, very pure, reduced to the essential.

After settling permanently in Paris in 1957, Luis Tomasello carried out his first kinetic experiments in the aeroplane, working with Marino di Teana. The following year saw the appearance of the first reliefs in which, as a pioneer, the artist integrated the effects of the reflection of colour. In 1958 he joined the Galerie Denise René group and since then has continued to develop a body of work entirely focused on the problems of light. Numerous solo exhibitions have been devoted to him all over the world. Most notably, in 1976, a major retrospective at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and, more recently, in 1985, another at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. Continuing with the plastic research born at the beginning of this century and commonly called "geometric abstract art" or "constructivism", Tomasello is part of this group of so-called kinetic creators who, in the 1950s, wanted to integrate movement into their works. They implemented either virtual movement by multiplying perspectives and other optical illusions (Op Art), or real movement produced by mechanical, electrical or natural forces such as wind. Tomasello explored the effects obtained by the reflection of light in vibrant three-dimensional compositions, very pure, reduced to the essentials.

    Est: €2,000 - €2,200

LUIS TOMASELLO (*La Plata, Argentina 1915 – Paris, 2014). “Chromoplastic atmosphere III”. 2006. Embossed edition Copy 24/75. Signed. Measurements: 43 x 43 x 5 cm. This work belongs to the series of the same name, where the artist Luis Tomasello explores optical illusions and geometric structures, placing cubes on a white background generating unique plays of lights and shadows. Tomasello manages to unite the language of painting and sculpture in these works. Luis Tomasello entered the Prilidiano Peyredon National School of Fine Arts in 1932. From 1940 to 1944 he continued his studies at the Ernesto de la Carcova Painting School in Buenos Aires and worked in figuration until 1950. In 1945 he made his first stay in Europe and addressed geometric abstraction. In 1951, Tomasello made his first trip to Europe and arrived in Sicily to see the land of his father. He discovers Mondrian's work. He finally resided in Paris for six months. He discovers the medieval stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral and has for the first time the intuition of color-light, which will be decisive in his work. After its final installation in Paris in 1957, Luis Tomasello carried out his first kinetic experiments on the plane, working with Marino di Teana. The following year the first reliefs appeared where, as a pioneer, the artist integrated the effects of color reflection. In 1958 he joined the Galerie Denise René group and has since continued to develop a body of work entirely focused on problems of light. Numerous personal exhibitions have been dedicated to him around the world. Among which stand out, in 1976, a major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris and, more recently, in 1985, another at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. Continuing with the plastic research born at the beginning of this century and commonly called "geometric abstract art" or "constructivism", Tomasello is part of this group of so-called kinetic creators who, in the 1950s, wanted to integrate movement into their works. .
