        François Tortebat (around 1621 Paris - 1690 ibid.) after Simon Vouet (1590 Paris - 1649 ibid.): Ceres tramples over the attributes of war, 1666, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Quot mala pax tollit: tot gignit pax bona. quis non Pacem igitur, si vult esse beatus, amet? | Sim. Vouet pinxit. | Franc. Tortebat delin. sculp. et ex. 1666, | cum privilegio Regis". Date: 1666 Description: The depiction after Vouet's painting "Cérès foulant aux pieds les attributs de la guerre" from around 1645, which is now in the Musée Thomas Henry in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, shows Ceres, the goddess of agriculture and fertility, Neptune with the trident and Pluto in the form of a crowned statue with the three-headed dog Cerberus at his feet. These three deities represent land, water and the underworld. Weapons lying on the ground and the pair of putti with an olive branch symbolise peace.         Anatomy.- Tortebat (François) Abregé d'Anatomie, accomodé aux Arts de Peinture et de Sculpture, second edition, engraved pictorial title, 10 engraved full-page illustrations after Vesalius, some spotting and light marginal staining, old marbled wrappers, a little rubbed and stained, spine repaired, preserved in modern cloth folder and slip-case, Paris, J.B.Crepy, 1760; and an Atlas of 13 engraved plates illustrating Scarpa's anatomy (4 with partial hand-colouring), folio (2) ⁂ The second most important work on anatomy for the use of artists, first published in 1667 and preceded only by van der Gracht's Anatomie... of 1634. The plates are taken from Vesalius, re-engraved and reversed, and feature male figures as skeletons or displaying their muscles, tendons, etc.

        Abrégé d'anatomie accommodé aux arts de peinture et sculpture. Paris, J.-B. Crépy, 1760. In-folio, cartonnage de papier marbré bleu avec coins de vélin (Reliure de l'époque). Nouvelle édition de cet ouvrage très utile à tous ceux qui font profession du dessin, publié originellement en 1668. Il se rattache aussi à la science anatomique par la magnifique représentation qu'il offre de l'ossature et de la myologie humaines. L'illustration comprend un titre-frontispice et 10 planches à pleine page montrant 3 squelettes et 7 écorchés, gravées à l'eau-forte par François Tortebat d'après les figures exécutées en sens inverse par Jan Calcar, l'élève du Titien, pour le célèbre traité De humani corporis fabrica de Vésale. Pâles mouillures marginales sur 3 ff. de texte et quelques petites rousseurs sans gravité.

        Abregé d'Anatomie ... 10 Radierungen im mod. Lederbd. mit goldgepr. Deckeltitel. Folio. (1668). Le Blanc 14-25. Der vorliegende Band umfaßt die wohl komplette Folge der Skelettdarstellungen, die Tortebat für die von ihm verfaßte, und ab 1667 in mehreren Auflagen erschienene anatomische Anleitung für Maler und Bildhauer schuf. Als Vorlage dienten ihm die teils von Schülern Tizians entworfenen Illustrationen zu dem von Andreas Vesalius verfaßten "Tabulae anatomicae ..." von 1538. Nebst den Illustrationen selbst sind die Einleitung wie auch die Erläuterungen zu den zehn Tafeln beigebunden. Ganz ausgezeichnete, kräftige Drucke mit Rand bzw. Rändchen. Alters- und Gebrauchsspuren, im Ganzen gleichwohl guter Gesamteindruck. Beiliegend zwei weitere anatomische Tafeln aus einem Buch des 19. Jh.
