      SAKUMA Totarô (1900-1976) Mashiko kilns, (Tochigi pref.) Two beige and cream irregularly covered stoneware chawan tea bowls, with stylized decoration brown for one, brown and green for the other. H 8 x D 14 cm H 8 x D 12 cm Nb. Sakuma was Hamada's student when Hamada came to Mashiko. Although not as internationally known as Hamada, Sakuma gained some reputation in Japan. SAKUMA Totarô (1900-1976) Fours de Mashiko, (pref. de Tochigi) Deux bols à thé chawan en grès à couverte irrégulière beige et crème, à décor stylisé brun pour l'un, brun et vert pour l'autre. H 8 x D 14 cm H 8 x D 12 cm Nb. Sakuma fut l'élève de Hamada lorsque ce dernier vint à Mashiko. Bien que moins internationalement connu que Hamada, Sakuma acquis une certaine réputation au Japon.

      A JAPANESE MASHIKO MINGEI STUDIO POTTERY VASE SAKUMA TOTARO (1900-1976), SHOWA PERIOD (1926-1989), CIRCA 1950S A generously potted stoneware vase featuring an ame-yu (caramel) glaze ground with tetsu-yu (iron) and kaki-yu (persimmon) gestural designs reminiscent of abstracted bamboo foliage and fences, with a cream coloured glaze to the neck and mouth. 25cm high, 18cm diameter OTHER NOTES: Sakuma Totaro was from an old lineage of potters in Mashiko. He was the first of the Mashiko potters to befriend master of mingei pottery Hamada Shoji when he came to Mashiko in 1924, and Hamada subsequently stayed and worked with Sakuma, Sakuma becoming his student of Mingei. Ultimately through Hamada, Sakuma also became aquainted with Bernard Leach of St Ives, and Kawai Kanjiro.
