Emilie Touraine, daughter of jeweler Pierre Jacque Touraine, was born September 1, 1939, in New York, New York, and raised, from 1943, in Pasadena, Altadena, and Alhambra, California. In 1960, she moved with her family to Scottsdale, Arizona, working there as an artist for twenty years. For varying periods during this time, she visited the Pacific Northwest, during 1972-1977; Nebraska, in the 1970s; and lived, for varying periods with the traditional Hopi of northern Arizona in the late 1970s to early 1980s. She moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1980, where she changed her painting medium from oil to acrylic because of health reasons. From 1987-1991, she lived in a Cook Ranch line camp near Santa Fe, New Mexico. She now lives in Corrales, New Mexico. Subjects for her art include horses, burros, owls, old farm buildings, ranch gates, and rural mail boxes. By the mid-1960s, she was doing what she referred to as "Symbolic Americana," exploring ancient legends of Native Americans in relation to their future. Some of her Western works are reproduced on greeting cards by Leanin' Tree Publishing Company, Boulder, Colorado. Her work is in the collection of the Christlieb Foundation, Great Plains Art Collection, Center of the Great Plains, University of Nebraska, Lincoln. In 1974, Touraine won best in show and the directors' award at the Pacific Northwest Indian Center Show and Auction, in Spokane, Washington. Her exhibitions include a 1973 one-person show at the Montana Historical Society, Helena; and paintings in the U.S. Pavilion at Expo '74, Spokane. Emilie Touraine passed away in Albuquerque, NM on September 25, 2019 at the age of 80. She is survived by her goddaughter Aletris Neils.
