      Nov. 29, 2013

Charles Towne the Younger (1781-1854), 'Smugglers', 1799

      Est: €1,600 - €2,000

Oil on wood England, 1799 Charles Towne the Younger (1781-1854) - British Landscape Painter Signed and dated lower left 'Ch. Towne, 1799' Overall dimensions, framed: 44 x 38 cm Provenance: German Private Collection The beauty of Charles Towne the Younger's painting lies in his finely painted landscapes and friendly depiction of people. Both can be found beautifully combined in this painting. Paintings by Charles Towne the Younger fetch up to 58,000 euros at international auctions This panel painting by Charles Towne the Younger shows a group of smugglers resting on the shore of a lake underneath a great fortress. The artist used the space of the panel to portray the people in the foreground in a detailed manner and then lead the view over the beautiful landscape in the middle ground onto the fortress in the high back. Above it all is the clouded sky whose darkest clouds almost appear to frame the painting in the upper half. The group on the shore seems to be resting; some sleep in the middle of their contraband goods, others rest on the rocks, smoking and talking. A woman has provided the smugglers with food and the atmosphere seems a peaceful one. Only one of them is working and carries a barrel down to the boat whose mast can be seen behind the moss-grown rocks. The mast leads the beholder's view upwards and thus connects the genre like scene in the foreground with the impressive landscape. This panel painting by Charles Towne the Younger is in an appealing condition. It has been covered by a thick layer of varnish and has a very regular craquelure and some minor colour losses and touch ups around the edges, especially in the area of the sky. The colour layer is partly a bit stained. The painting is signed and dated in the lower left'Ch. Towne, 1799'. It is framed in an elegant wooden frame, whose overall dimensions are 44 x 38 cm. The dimensions of the panel are 35.3 x 29.2 cm. The panel bears a hand written old label giving the artist's name as well as a stamped number from the auction house Christie's. Charles Towne der Jüngere (1781-1854) Charles Towne the Younger was a British landscape painter. He was often confused with the painter of the same name, Charles Towne (1763-1840) and thus it happened that their biographies often have been merged. Today, quite a lot is known about Charles Towne (1763-1840) who painted in the style of George Stubbs, but little or nothing is known about Charles Towne the Younger.
