Marie Cerminova (Toyen) (Czech/French, 1902-1980) "Untitled, Surrealist Composition", 1937 ink and watercolor on paper signed and dated lower left. Matted, glazed and framed. sight 8" x 5-1/2", framed 16-1/2" x 13-1/2" Literature: Iveta Jusova, ed., Czech Feminisms: Perspectives on Gender in East Central Europe, Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2016; Dmitrieva, Marina, "Transcending Gender: Cross-Dressing as a Performative Practice of Women Artists of the Avant-Garde", Marianne Werefkin and the Women Artists in Her Circle, ed. Tanja Malycheva and Isabel Wunsche, The Netherlands: Brill, 2017, pp 123-133 Notes: One of the leading Czech Surrealists, little is know of Toyen's childhood though it is believed she was from a working class family. Born Marie Cerminova, she worked briefly in a factory before leaving home permanently at 16 and entering the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design (UMPRUM) in Prague. It was at the Academy that she first became aware of the Czech avant garde and, along with several of her fellow students including Jindrich Styrsky formed the Devetsil, an artistic group that included painters, poets and writers and which stressed the connection between art and poetic expression . It was around this time that she adopted the gender neutral pseudonym she was to use for the remainder of her life. Toyen frequently dressed in masculine clothing and often used masculine signifiers when speaking. Not surprisingly, much of her work explored gender norms and sexuality and while early in her career it was of an extremely erotic nature, it became less so over the years. Her work has often been referred to as lyrical or dreamlike, and reveals a deft melding of the real and unreal.

The painting was bought by the grandparents of the current owner directly from Toyen in Paris around 1950. They personally knew the painter very well and their friends’ circle also included André Breton, Paul Eluard and Julien Green. – private collection Beirut- Paris Vladimir Lekes commented on the provenance: ‘‘Being able to offer the painting Serenade at our auction in spite of the fact that all important works by Toyen are well documented is a testament to the fact that miracles sometimes happen. Once, as I was waiting for my connection at the Marseille airport shortly after the record-breaking auction of Autumn 2020, when we sold a different oil on canvas by Toyen La Dame de Pique to the collection of the National Museum of Qatar for 79 million CZK, I was contacted by an international broadcasting radio station. They asked me for an interview covering the auction and I agreed. The current owner of the painting, who is based in Beirut, coincidentally heard the interview and subsequently reached out to me to enter the painting into our next auction.’’ The renowned expert on Toyen’s oeuvre Dr Karel Srp welcomed the discovery of this painting previously unknown to the public and last exhibited in 1926 in Paris: ‘‘This is the single most important discovery of this year…’’ Exhibited: – L´art d´aujourd´hui (The Art of Today), La chambre syndicale et des Beaux arts, Paris, 27. 11.–10. 12. 1926, catalogue number 27 The expertise by Dr Karel Srp, recognized expert, author of Toyen’s monograph book and a curator of a number of Toyen’s exhibitions worldwide, attached. Toyen (Marie Cerminova), (1902 – 1980), Sans Titre, around 1955

        Est: Kč800,000 - Kč1,200,000

oil, gouache, silver paint, ink on canvas 16 x 10 cm (29 x 18,5 cm) original adjustment and original frame Provenance: - private collection of André Breton (1896–1966), the famous founder and main theoretician of the Surrealist movement, writer and a poet, who was gifted this work by Toyen in 1950s - private collection of André Breton’s daughter Aube Elleouet-Breton - gallery 1900–2000 Paris - private collection, Paris An expert’s report written by Dr Karel Srp attached: ‘Toyen was able to express her inter- nal feelings even on smaller-scale works, often linked to her drawings. This is the case of a series of smaller paintings, which include the present fantastical feline head on a blue background. In the early 1950s, Toyen was interested in combining two similar profiles, the connection of which would create a single face. She has thus continued the long- -standing artistic tradition of depicting typified heads, expressively exploring their psyche. In this instance, she depicted her favourite feline, a subject she has been interested in for decades. Here, she focused exclusively on the feline’s head set against intangible empti- ness. Even today, we can feel the head forming itself in front of us slowly from the layers of white paint, interrupted by sharp ink lines that represent the cat’s whiskers. With the combination of gouache and ink, Toyen creates a ghost that turns to the viewer and stirs up strong emotion. In this work, Toyen showed off her ability to master any expression.’ The famous poet and writer André Breton, considered the founder and main theoretician of Surrealism, often compared Toyen’s eyes to the depths of light. Their relationship was one of mutual respect. In 1934, the main leader of the Czech Surrealist circle Toyen invited Andrého Breton to Prague. In autumn of the same year, she designed the cover for the Czech edition of Breton’s Communicating Vessels. In January 1934, the first Czech Surrealist exhibition opened, with Breton and Paul Eluard in attendance. After the Second World War, in 1947, Toyen left Paris permanently and joined André Breton’s Surrealist group. She introduced her work at a solo exhibition in Galerie Denise ené. The introduction to the exhibition catalogue was written by André Breton. Toyen participated in most of the group’s joint exhibitions and earned boundless admi- ration from the young Surrealists. After Breton’s death in 1966, Elise Breton Toyen offered Toyen to take over Breton’s atelier in rue Fontaine. The painted continued to live there until her death in 1980. An authenticity confirmation by Aube Elleouet-Breton, André Breton’s daughter, attached. Consulted with Professor Jaromir Zemina, Dr Karel Srp, Dr Jiri Machalicky, Aneta Kopecka and Vladimir Lekes.

TOYEN (MARIE CERMINOVA, 1902-1980) Erotic Illustration from Marquis de Sade: Justina cili prokletí ctnosti . Pen and ink on cream wove paper. 208x156 mm; 8 1/8x6 1/4 inches. Initialed and dated in pen and ink, lower right recto, signed in pencil, lower right recto. 1932. This illustration appeared in Marquis de Sade: Justina cili prokletí ctnosti, published in 1932 in an edition of only 200 by Jindrich Štyrský, Prague. Toyen and Štyrský met in 1922 and were both members of the Devetsil, a group of Czech avant-garde artists. The two creatives were companions and collaborators; Toyen illustrating for Štyrský's Edice 69, his multi-volume set of erotic literature, and his Erotická Revue, a subscription journal. While living in Paris in 1927 both would create a new style of art, "Artificialism" which sought to fuse poetry and art to evoke real emotions, bringing subconscious fixations, dreams, desires, and memories to the forefront. Upon returning to Prague in 1928, Štyrský and Toyen continued to live together and alternatively hosted and visited André Breton among other proponents of the Paris Surrealist movement during the mid-1930s. Signing their Parisian counterparts' manifesto, Štyrský and Toyen founded the Surrealist chapter in Prague. Though the group ran parallel with the French, the Prague Surrealists developed their own identity characterized by phantasmagorical forms. During World War II and the occupation of Prague, Toyen was one of the few who secretly produced "degenerate" avant-garde works. After Štyrský's death in 1942 and the end of the war, Toyen relocated to Paris and continued to exhibit art with the Surrealists, becoming a major figure in the movement. Exhibited: "Feminine-Masculine: The Sex of Art," Musee National d'Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, October 1995-January 1996. Provenance: Ubu Gallery, New York; acquired from the former 1995, private collection.
