Grandson of a sculptor in southern Italy, he had parents who recognized his talents early and, at the age of ten during the depression - sent him to the Leonardo da Vinci School of Art in Manhattan. Later he attended the High School of Music and Art - the school made famous in the movie FAME and was in its first graduating class in 1939. His student paintings gained the attention of New York Mayor Fiorrello LaGuardia, who displayed several in the Mayor's office. During his college years he studied at NYU, Temple University's Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, the University of Iowa, and at the University of California Berkley. Pat completed both his BA and MA degrees at Columbia University. During this period he studied with some of the great names in American Art: Grant Wood, Philip Guston, Horst W. Janson, and later developed lifetime friendships with John Canady, Milton Avery and Mark Rothko. In 1943 Pat enlisted in the U.S. Army's Intelligence Corps and served in World War II until 1945. Fluent in Italian, English and Russian, he served as a Russian interpreter for the 13th Armored Division under General Patton and was stationed in France and Austria. With the war almost over, in 1944 Pat married his high school sweetheart, Helen Kohl. Together they had two children, Stephen and Michele. After completing his MA degree in 1946, Pat was recruited by Robin Field to teach drawing and painting at Tulane University's Newcomb College, where he could also pursue his own artistic career. During that time he served as the Associate Chairman of Studio Art and later as Chairman of Newcomb College's Art Department. While he was known as a caring and sensitive teacher and was awarded Tulane's Mortar Board Award, for teaching excellence, he was happiest in his studio painting. His first one-person show in New York was in 1950, which was described by the NY Times' art critics as an auspicious first. Many more one-man shows followed at various galleries across the country. Today his paintings are on display in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Everson Museum, Guggenheim Museum, New Orleans Museum of Art, Newberger Museum, Whitney Museum as well as numerous corporate and private collections nationwide.Pat retired from Tulane in 1989 but continued as a prolific painter with numerous one-man shows. Provenance: Previously in the Collection of the Louisiana Land Trust and Exploration Company, New Orleans. Exh.: "Pat Trivigno: The Search for Inner Form", New Orleans Museum of Art, 1994 and illustrated in the accompanying catalogue, p. 30. Note: Showing promising artistic talent from the early age of seven, Pat Trivigno studied in his native New York before moving to New Orleans in 1947, where he was a revered professor at Newcomb College for forty-three years. Throughout his career, Trivigno often focused on his quest to find "inner form," as well as a manner in which to express emotion and meaning through the use of color. In “Atchafalaya Swamp #3,” Trivigno uses the colors found in nature, as well as the twisted branches of the cypress tree, to convey meaning through the complex composition of shapes and colors that sweep across the canvas. The large scale format is one he often used to envelope the viewer in his artistic vision. Ref.: Glade, Luba B. Pat Trivigno: The Search for Inner Form. New Orleans: New Orleans Museum of Art, 1994.
