Vikentiy Pavlovich Trofimov, Russian 1878-1956- The River Ob, 1928-29; oil on canvas, signed and dated 1928-29 lower left, 74x94cm Provenance: Acquired from the family of the artist by a private collection; Christie's, London 11 June 2008 lot 14; Bonhams, London 7 June 2010 lot 36; Private Collection, London Literature: E. Rudenko, Vikentii Trofimov. Zhivopis' i grafika, Moscow, Shishkin Gallery, 2007, p. 34, no. 12( illustrated) Exhibition: Moscow Branch of The Union of Soviet artists, according to the label on the reverse Note: This work is by the Russian painter Vikentiy Pavlovich Trofimov. Trofimov studied at the Stroganof Art School in Moscow, where he became a close friend of fellow painter Ignaty Nivinsky. This works belongs to the artist's Siberian series of works painted  in the late 1920s when the artists lived and worked in the city of Omsk as a head of Vrubel Art College. This piece is typical of Trofimov’s work, with his confident application of paint in vibrant blues and greens imbuing the expansive view of water (another favourite theme of the artist) with a further sense of vitality and animation. Works by Trofimov are held in the collections of numerous Russian museums, including the State Historical Museum, Tyumen Regional Museum of Fine Arts, the Shchusev Museum of Architecture, and the Voronezh Regional Museum, among others. Please note this work is in a wooden gilded with plaster molding frame. The frame is very damaged and has split in areas. There are chips and scuff marks and needs repairs. There is minor paint loss above the signature. On the upper edge on the right in the sky, the canvas there is a large dent, which we would suggest is caused by the frame meeting the canvas. Overall the piece appears to be in good condition.
