  • Simon Troger (attribuito a) A pair of lime wood and ivory beggars

Simon Troger (attribuito a) A pair of lime wood and ivory beggars

    Est: €7,000 - €9,000

limewood and elephant ivory carving (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797), carved in the round to depict figures of beggars. The figures, skillfully carved, portray two characters dressed in tattered clothing, a clear sign of the economic hardship and poverty of the subjects represented. The ivory carvings highlight the anatomical details and facial expressions, conveying a strong pathos that makes these pieces particularly realistic and moving. The male figure and the female figure, shown holding a child, are carved with remarkable attention to detail, as evidenced by their poses, hands, and worn-out clothing, which communicate the sense of suffering and social hardship embodied by these figures. The contrast between the dark wood and the light ivory creates a visually evocative composition, emphasizing the exposed areas of skin through a refined play of chiaroscuro. In the context of the 18th century, representations of beggars or figures from the lower social classes also had moral and educational significance, evoking religious themes of charity and compassion. These sculptures, therefore, may have held not only aesthetic value but also a didactic or symbolic purpose, inviting the viewer to reflect on the fragility of the human condition. The two sculptures are characteristic of the work of the Tyrolean sculptor Simon Troger (1683–1768) or his circle.Troger, originally from Tyrol, after an apprenticeship in the regional capital Innsbruck, opened a flourishing workshop in Munich around 1726, attracting several royal clients who were fascinated by the rare skill of the Tyrolean master in sculpting a difficult and precious material like ivory, combined with virtuoso wood carving. His works are designed to evoke realistic and highly expressive figures, representative of an era when art sought to capture and convey social and spiritual realities.Under the patronage of Elector Maximilian III Joseph of Bavaria (1727–1777), Troger became one of the most renowned ivory sculptors of his time, receiving commissions from many European courts. He also produced numerous monumental works, such as the famous group preserved in the Palazzo Madama in Turin, composed of the Sacrifice of Isaac and the Judgment of King Solomon, each over two meters tall, depicting biblical, mythological, and popular scenes, including beggars and street musicians. His works are held in prestigious private and public collections, such as the Hermitage Museum, Dresden, Vienna, and Munich, among others, confirming the artistic importance of his production.Height x width x depth: 24.5 x 9 x 9 cm. Weight: 255 g.Height x width x depth: 25 x 9 x 8.5 cm. Weight: 300 g. This lot, accompanied by a CITES certificate and expertise issued by Ce.S.Ar Centro studi archeometici, is only available for sale with shipments within the European Union.

Museum sculpture - Simon Troger, Abfaltersbach 1683 - 1768 Haidhausen, and workshop, Vagabond

    Est: €3,000 - €6,000

Museum sculpture - Simon Troger Abfaltersbach 1683 - 1768 Haidhausen, and workshop Exceptionally large, significant sculpture Vagabond Carved walnut and ivory Height 41 cm, width 19 cm, depth 17 cm This high quality carved figure (41 cm) is made of carved in a decorative combination of walnut and ivory. The vagabond wears a long pointed hat, a jacket with shirt and chest belt underneath, and knee breeches and boots. The young man holds a small dagger in his right hand and is propped up with his left hand on a long stick, which he uses to climb over the uneven rock at his feet, approaching the viewer. The figure was created in the workshop or the circle of Simon Troger (1693-1768) around the middle of the 18th century. Troger was an Austrian sculptor under the Bavarian electors, specializing especially in ivory. He had his own studio near Munich, in Haidhausen, from 1733. Since the Munich court of the Elector under Maximilian III Joseph of the Wittelsbach dynasty (Elector 1745-1777) had plenty of ivory in stock, this material was available to him in surplus. Troger's figures served mostly as objects of representation and as princely ceremonial gifts. The Wanderer has an expressive face with a prominent nose, bulging lips and vivid glass eyes. These were used on many of his figures to enhance their sense of effect. The vagabond's body is also dynamically curved and is captured in mid-motion, with expressive facial expressions and gestures. The roughly carved hands, covered with calluses, are typical. It is possible that he has to defend himself against another person or a wild animal on his way. It could also be a depiction of a shepherd - a kind of self-portrayal, since Troger himself was employed as a shepherd in his early years and began carving wooden figures with his pocket knife while tending the flock. Here his extraordinary talent for carving became apparent very early on. Especially in his early work, he created the depictions of society's outsiders, such as wanderers or beggars with ragged garments, which were typical of the time, before devoting himself to mythological and biblical subjects at the Elector's Court. The largest collection of Troger's works is now in the Bavarian National Museum. We would like to point out that from 18 January 2022 new regulations apply to the trade with ivory! https://www.bmk.gv.at/themen/klima_umwelt/naturschutz/artenhandel/recht/elfenbein.html#:~:text=Der%20kommerzielle%20Handel%20mit%20Elefanten,aber%20immer%20eine%20Bescheinigung%20notwendig

    Mar. 29, 2022

Museum sculpture - Simon Troger, Abfaltersbach 1683 - 1768 Haidhausen, and workshop, Vagabond or beggar

    Est: €3,000 - €6,000

Museum sculpture - Simon Troger Abfaltersbach 1683 - 1768 Haidhausen, and workshop Significant sculpture Vagabond or beggar Carved walnut and ivory Height 30,5 cm, width 10 cm, depth 11 cm This high quality figure (30.5 cm) is carved from a decorative combination of walnut and ivory. The sculpture wears a large traveling hat with a wide brim, as well as a traveling cape, a long shirt, ragged trousers and only one shoe. Or is the foot merely connected with a cloth? The man presents the viewer with an empty bag slung around his shoulder; in the right outstretched palm he holds a coin. Under this one could understand a request to donate money. The figure was created in the circle or the workshop of Simon Troger (1693-1768) around the middle of the 18th century. The vagabond has an expressive face with a prominent nose, richly carved head and beard hair, and bulging forehead. The open mouth signals that he is about to speak. The finely carved face with expressive facial expressions is characterized by a trimmed beard and combed curly hair. The long heavy coat and wide-brimmed hat also do not want to match the characterization as a beggar. This now allows room for interpretation: is this perhaps a nobleman who has been robbed by thieves, leaving him with only this one coin? Typical of Troger's works are the roughly carved hands with calluses. Troger's extraordinary talent for carving images became apparent very early on during his employment as a shepherd. Especially in his early work, he created depictions of society's outsiders, such as wanderers or beggars with torn garments, which were typical of the time, before devoting himself to mythological and biblical subjects at the Elector's Court. The largest collection of Troger's works is now in the Bavarian National Museum. FIGURENGRUPPE IN HOLZ UND ELFENBEIN Maximale Höhe der Figur: 29,5 cm. Gesamhöhe mit Sockel: 34 cm. Sockellänge: 41 cm. Sockeltiefe: 20 cm. Tirol oder Süddeutschland, 18. Jahrhundert.

Attributed to Simon Troger, , a composed group of six carved and stained...

    Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Attributed to Simon Troger, (German 1683 ~ 1768), a composed group of six carved and stained wood and ivory models of mendicants, circa 1750, comprising five male figures and an elderly female, all portrayed as standing or walking, with inset glass eyes and shown in ragged clothing, on carved and shaped wood bases, the largest 24.5cm high Simon Troger is considered to be one of the most prominent German sculptors of the late Baroque period. His figures and groups distinctively combined wood and ivory, with inset glass eyes, sometimes including details in metal. They were remarked upon as much for their expressive faces and theatrical poses as much as they were for the technical skill employed in their production Troger trained in Merano and Innsbruck, followed by sojourns in Italy, Copenhagen and finally Munich -the city in which he opened his own highly productive workshop by 1727. Troger's composite figures represent beggars and large and complex religious or secular compositions, generally using more ivory than wood. Some of the more important figural groups and statuettes are held at the Castle of Rosenborg in Copenghagen, London's Victoria & Albert Museum, the Staatliche Museum in Berlin, and with a major collection held at the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich Literature: Theuerkauff, C., Nachmittelalterliche Elfenbeine, Die Bildewerke in Elfenbein des 16 - 19 Jahrhunderts, Staatlichemuseen Berlin, Band II, Berlin, 1986, pp. 268 - 273, Cat.
