TRUMBULL, JOHN - Battle of Bunker Hill, Boston 1798

          Est: $1,500 - $2,000

[London: Antonio de Poggi, 1798]. Sheet size: 21 1/2 x 31 1/4 inches. Image without margins or titles has been re-backed and re-margined. Title, artist's and engraver's names supplied separately, as is the key. Rare proof before letters of an iconic American image with the key that was issued giving the names of all the major figures. After seeing the painting, which was completed at the end of January, 1786, Benjamin West declared it to be the best picture of a modern battle that has been painted. Quite a compliment, coming from the President of the Royal Academy, alluding to the hottest genre in the fine arts at the time. As a young officer of the Continental Army, Trumbull was within earshot of the battle and had seen the smoke rise from the fields; after the battle, he had seen the battle fatigue on the soldiers' expressions and had heard many accounts of the battle from fellow officers who were directly involved. In this way, he stitched together what he considered to be an authentic re-enactment of this crucial battle, the opening salvo in the War for American Independence.

ORIGINAL SKETCH OF FRIEDRICH WILHELM VON STEUBEN ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN TRUMBULL

          Est: $1,500 - $2,500

ORIGINAL SKETCH OF FRIEDRICH WILHELM VON STEUBEN ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN TRUMBULL Original portrait sketch, approx. 5 1/4" x 6 3/4", executed in black ink on the front pastedown of a detached book cover, attributed to JOHN TRUMBULL (1756-1843), the American painter of Revolutionary War portraits and scenes, who also served as adjutant to George Washington. The sketch, entirely consistent with Trumbull''s style, presents a chest-up view of Major General FRIEDRICH WILHELM VON STEUBEN (1730-1794), inspector general of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Trumbull signs the sketch with his initials "J.T." at right beneath von Steuben''s shoulder, adding the date "1786". At this time, Trumbull was living in Paris, sketching studies of individuals for his "Declaration of Independence" and "Surrender of Lord Cornwallis", both later purchased by Congress and displayed in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Von Steuben would be among the figures depicted in the latter work, making it possible that the sketch presented here is one of those studies. Trumbull launched his career as an artist by painting miniature portraits, following advice from his mentor Benjamin West; he would execute over 250 such miniatures in his lifetime, and it is also possible that the sketch presented here may be a study for such a portrait. The composition and details of von Steuben''s physical appearance, dress and decorations suggest that Trumbull may have modeled this depiction after Charles Willson Peale''s well-known 1780 portrait of the general. Affixed to the bottom edge of the portrait is a 3 3/4" x 1" handwritten paper label, reading: "Gen. von Steuben by John Trumbull Gen. Washington''s adjutant. Sketched on cover of War Records". A second hand has added the parenthetical notation "Dr. C. Fields", likely an early owner of the piece. The portrait shows even toning overall with soiling at upper right, not affecting the sketch, with bumped corners and a ragged edge at top where the cover was removed from the book. An old pin hole is visible at top center, and the marbled paper of the cover is still visible on the verso, very good overall. Also present with the portrait is a backing board originally used in framing the piece, bearing the label of Kennedy Galleries in New York, one of the oldest and most respected art galleries on the United States. This label also bears the number "63531" in blue ink, likely a gallery stock number. The backing also bears a copy of the information listed on the label affixed to the portrait, as well as a photocopy biographical entry on Trumbull from a French reference. Altogether, a fantastic, previously unknown depiction of a significant figure in our Revolutionary history, executed by one of the preeminent portraitists of the era.

John Trumbull was an American painter, diplomat and architect. He is noted for his four large history paintings in the Capitol Rotunda, which depict pivotal moments before, during and after the Revolutionary War. He drew upon his own experiences and the personal acquaintances that he formed during the war to depict the places and people involved. John Trumbull was born in Lebanon, Connecticut, on June 6, 1756, to a prominent and prosperous family. His father, Jonathan Trumbull, was later Governor of Connecticut (1769–1784). John graduated from Harvard College in 1773. During his brief service as an officer and General Washington’s aide-de-camp during the Revolutionary War, he sketched significant people and places of the conflict. Resigning his commission as colonel in 1777, he continued to paint and then went to England, where he studied under renowned history painter Benjamin West and at the Royal Academy of Arts. During travels in London, Paris, and New York City, he painted scenes of the American Revolution and life portraits or sketches of many of the individuals who would appear in them.

JOHN TRUMBULL, Historic American Artist and Painter Autograph Letter Signed 1816

          Est: $1,800 - $2,400

Autographs American Painter "John Trumbull" Mentions Two Historic Signers of the Declaration of Independence From Connecticut in 1816 JOHN TRUMBULL (1756-1843). Historical American Artist and Painter, known as "The Painter of the Revolution" notable for his historical paintings. His painting of the signing of the Declaration of Independence was used on the reverse of the modern two-dollar bill. April 18, 1816-Dated, Autograph Letter Signed, "Jno Trumbull," To his brother, David, in Lebanon (CT), New York, 10" x 8", Choice Extremely Fine. This wonderful Letter reads, in full: "Dear Brother - We send by Capt. Davison to the care of Jonathan, for W. Williams; the favorite little puppy. - James Watson wishes for the other which will be a large Dog. - this is far the most intelligent & playful, and we hope will replace Pompey in the good will of all the Family. - We are happy to hear that Sister & you got safely & pleasantly home & found all friends well there and on your way. - I understand your assistance is wanted in Dusy: & hope we shall see you here again soon. - Will you beg W. Williams to make his decision between Mr. Huntington & myself soon. - I long to have that affair settled. - Mrs. T.(rumble) joins in kindest wishes to Sister & yourself & I am truly yours - Jn. Trumbull" A wonderful, very personal family message with mention of two Signers of the Declaration of Independence, both from Connecticut, William Williams and Samuel Huntington. Very clean and clearly written in dark brown ink, lightly folded, an earlier collector notation at bottom, complete with an integral address leaf to "David Trubull Esq., Lebanon (CT)". A rare, personal letter from "The Painter of The Revolution". John Trumbull served in the Revolution, then studied in London with Benjamin West, under whose tutelage he painted the "Battle of Bunker's Hill" and the "Death of General Montgomery in the Attack of Quebec." Many of his paintings had the most famous and historic Revolutionary War subjects and George Washington sat for him a number of times. He also painted the four Revolutionary War mural scenes which today still decorate the Rotunda of the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.. The "W Williams" referred to in the letter was William Williams, Signer of the Declaration of Independence. The affair which Trumbull wanted to settle with Williams may have been a decision on which artist was going to paint Williams' portrait! William Williams (1731-1811) was an American merchant and political leader from Lebanon, Connecticut. He was a delegate for Connecticut to the Continental Congress in 1776, where he signed the Declaration of Independence. Samuel Huntington (1731-1796) was a member of the Continental Congress 1774-84; during that time he served on many Revolutionary War committees, Signed the Declaration of Independence, and succeeded John Jay as president of the Congress. He was elected governor of Connecticut in 1786, an office to which he was reelected annually for eleven years.
