Cybernetic objects were even stronger related to their environment, as they reacted promptly to external influences and manipulations by the viewer. Wen-Ying Tsai was one of the main protagonists of these art developments in America. The present work is an impressive example of his artistic output. It reveals a square metal board which is decorated with circles of iridescent foil reflecting the light like little diamonds and hence affecting the three-dimensional space. The work is signed, dated and numbered on verso 'Tsai Wen-Ying. 1970. 50/100'. It is in very good condition with only minimal superficial crease marks. The dimensions of the metal board are 60.8 x 60.8 cm. Wen-Ying Tsai (1928-1913) Wen-Ying Tsai was born in Amoy, China, and received his early artistic training in traditional Chinese painting. In 1939, he moved to Shanghai, where he studied engineering at the Ta Tung University. In 1950 he emigrated to the USA and studied mechanical engineering at Michigan University. After graduating in 1953 he went to New York, where he worked as an engineer in the development of laboratories for atomic research. Following his artistic interest, he took advanced courses at the Art Students League in Manhattan. His first solo exhibition was held at Ruth Sherman Gallery in New York in 1961. He became an US citizen in 1962 and decided to devote himself entirely to kinetic and cybernetic art. Since 1971 Wen-Ying Tsai has mainly lived in Paris. Examples of his works can be found, for instance, at the Tate Gallery in London. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
