BRITISH PATTERN 1845 INFANTRY OFFICERS SWORD

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

PRESENTED TO LT. COL. J.J. TURNER OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA. Overall length: 39 3/4". Blade length: 32”. A fine example of a standard British P1845 infantry officer’s saber w/ brass scabbard, white buff knot & white buff belt. Single fullered blade has a slightly raised medial ridge below the fuller. Blade is etched over the first half of the blade w/ foliate motifs along w/ a crowned “VR”. Blade is etched at the ricasso, “HENRY WILKINSON PALL MALL LONDON”. Gilded brass hilt featuring a pierced guard w/ a crowned “VR”. Inside guard folds down to facilitate wearing close to the body. Wire wrapped sharkskin grip. Lg. white buff sword knot. Brass scabbard is engraved between the mounts, “Presented to Lt. Col. J. J. Turner C S A 1862 by Friends”. We were able to find a Lt. Col. J.J. Turner commanding the Tenth & Thirtieth Tennessee Infantry. There is a white buff belt attached w/ original saber hangers. Buckle would have originally been a snake type example but the snake has been lost & replaced w/ a plain S type hook. A very interesting & possibly intensely historic sword worthy of time & research. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray cleaned finish w/ areas of cleaned pitting particularly near the tip. The extreme tip of the sword is missing. Etching is quite clear. Hilt retains 70% of original gilded finish. Knot is worn but quite solid. Scabbard has a few superficial shallow dents but no notable damage. Engraved presentation is clear. Belt & hangers are reasonably pliable & remain quite solid. (02-14196/BF). $2,000-3,000.
