George Richard Dick Turner (Florida, Indiana, 1909-1999). Dick Turner was an American cartoonist, best known for the cartoon feature 'Carnival'. Born George Richard Turner in Indianapolis, Indiana, Turner attended DePauw University, where he also contributed drawings to the campus magazine The Yellow Crab. He was an insurance salesman in Connecticut upon graduation in 1932, but turned to freelance work and advertising art in Indiana a few years later.He was affiliated with the Newspaper Enterprise Association Service from 1940, creating 'Carnival' and its Sunday companion strip 'Mr. Merryweather'. The syndicate sold the strip to over 500 newspapers by the late 1960s. Turner drew his inspiration from the everyday situations of the residents of his small Indiana town. The ran until at least 1975, while 'Carnival' completed its run in 1980. Turner retired in Vero Beach, Florida where he died in November 1999.
