His teachers included George de Forest Brush, John Henry Twachtman, and Frank DuMond.Turney painted his visual memoirs of the Erie Basin along the Brooklyn waterfront until 1911. He continued to explore urban themes such as modern cityscape and was often inspired by his friend, George Luks, a member of the realist group of painters known as The Eight (or Ashcan School).

Winthrop Duthie Turney American, 1884-1965 The Gas Flame Signed Winthrop Turney (ll) Oil on canvas 27 1/4 x 24 1/4 inches Provenance: Private collection Exhibited: New York, NY, Allied Artist's of American, Inc., 49th Annual Exhibition, 1962 An artist who studied at the Art Students League with John Henry Twachtman, George Deforest Brush, and Frank Vincent DuMond, Turney gradually shifted from a modified Impressionist style to a mode influenced by Precisionism. He drew inspiration from his surroundings in Brooklyn, including creating a pictorial documentation of an area of the Brooklyn watercront known as the "Erie Basin." The Gas Flame dates from the 1930s, when Turney often rendered still lifes and interiors using simple, stylized shapes and a crisp delineation of form. Here, he conveys the feeling of a moment when a striking, shimmering view of the Brooklyn waterfront has drawn attention away from what is at hand: a burner that remains on even after the water in a kettle has boiled. The incandescent light of the burner's gas flame draws our gaze from the range to the riverscape, while the windows seem to create their own paintings within the painted image.
