        Est: $50,000 - $75,000

TURPIN, Pierre Jean-Francois (French 1775-1840). Cactus Triangularis. Watercolor and pencil on paper. 18 5/8" x 11 1/2" sheet, 25 1/2" x 18 1/4" framed. Two Very Talented French Natural History Artists Sent to the West Indies in 1801 by Napoleon to explore for profitable plants. The Most Important Natural History Watercolors Relating to the West Indies Ever to Come to Market. Pierre-Antoine Poiteau and Pierre Jean François Turpin’s botanical drawings are some of the most exquisite of the nineteenth century. Their remarkable precision surpassed the mere requirements of scientific illustration. When the unlikely duo met in 1794, each brought a complementary skill to the friendship. Turpin, a skilled draftsman, was just a teenager of 19 serving in the military, while Poiteau was a self-taught botanist who had begun to hone his craft at the age of 28. Their stories became intertwined through a fortuitous encounter in a Santo Domingo garden; from then on, drawing became the core of their joint artistic practice. The present collection of Poiteau and Turpin’s works is the largest intact grouping of their works and is in extraordinary condition, having rarely been exposed to light in the last two hundred years. Drawings include preparatory works for several publications, with the bulk for Flore des Antilles (1808-1827), Flora Parisiensis (1808), and Dictionnaire des sciences naturelles (1816-1830), among others. Individual images by these artists can be found in distinguished collections such as the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Royal Horticultural Society, Lindley Library.

Lots 56 - 58 Are The Most Important Natural History Watercolors Relating to the West Indies Ever to Come to Market One Of The Most Important Plants In The History Of The Colonial West Indies, Which Drove The Economy Of Mercantilism In The 17th - 19th Centuries. Tussac wrote of this plant: “Of all the vegetable productions which grow in Asia, Africa, and America, the cotton plant must, in terms of its usefulness, hold second place; I have already given the first to the banana tree… inde pendently of the healthy and pleasant food that the banana tree provides, if we are to believe an ancient tradition, the leaves of this beautiful plant are the largest and finest in their tissue that we can cite among all the plants, were used by our mother to make breeches for her husband, and to make a skirt; hence, leading to the trivial name of the banana fig tree as father Adam’s breeches. There is only one species of native cotton plant found in the Antilles, which is known under the trivial name of maroon cotton plant; I regard it as identical to the one I am describing…. The species that are preferably cultivated in the West Indies are the hairy cotton (gossipium hirsutum) with white wool, and its variety with tawny wool, one with hairy seeds adhering to the wool, the other with glabrous seeds that come off easily. It is particularly this species that is cultivated in Santo Domingo… this cotton tree has the advan tage of lasting five to six years, by pruning the dead branches every year, it is also less subject to being devoured by caterpillars, which seem to be put off by the little down with which the leaves are covered.” ------ Pierre Jean François Turpin was a French botanist and illustrator. Original copper engraving illustration. No. 58 - Combretum trifoliatum - from the 1st edition of "Choix de plantes: dont la plupart sont cultivees dans le jardin de Cels". Page size: 50 x 31.5 cm, image size: 27.5 x 19 cm. Artist - Pancrace Bessa (1772-1846), student of Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), engraver - Francois Noel Sellier (1737-1790). The edges are cropped. Minor dirt, foxings /// The edition "Choix de plantes : dont la plupart sont cultivees dans le jardin de Cels" is very rare. The artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté and the botanist Étienne Pierre Ventenat had worked together before. The first joint work of Redouté and Ventenat was a commission from Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais for the artistic decoration of her garden of rare plants in Malmaison. As a result, the famous "Garden of Malmaison" (1803-04) was created . The book "A Selection of Plants, Most of Which Are Grown in Cels's Garden", published around the same time, is further evidence of their successful collaboration. Jacques-Philippe-Martin Cels (1740-1806) was a tax collector from 1761 up until the Revolution, when he was forced to resign and devote himself to the study of botany under the direction of Bernard de Jussie and Louis-Guillaume Le Monnier and under the influence of Rousseau. At the beginning of the 19th century, Cels laid out a garden of about 18 hectares, first described by Ventenat in “Description of new and little-known plants grown in the garden of J.M. Sels” (1800-1802) with 100 color illustrations by P.J. Redoubt. The second book, “A Selection of Plants, Most of Which Are Grown in the Cels's Garden,” is his second book, which reflects the beauty of the famous garden of Celsus, recognized by contemporaries as one of the most beautiful in Europe.

He received little formal education but was trained in the elements of drawing by a local artist. He joined the battalion of Calvados and was posted to Cap-Haitien where he was befriended by the self-taught botanist and botanical artist Pierre Antoine Poiteau, who had been sent to the colony as a plant collector by the Jardin des Plantes. Their collaboration resulted in hundreds of illustrated plates and a herbarium of several thousand specimens representing about 1200 different species.
