A much sought-after portraitist in both sculpture and oil paint, Danish artist Laurits Tuxen also distinguished himself as a gifted landscapist associated with the Skagen painters—a group of Scandinavian artists who formed an artists' colony in the village of Skagen in the northernmost part of Denmark between the later 1870s and 1900. Skagen's scenic nature, long beautiful beaches, and colorful community of fisherfolk attracted northern artists to paint en plein air, in emulation of the French Impressionists whose work many members of the group had seen in Paris. In the present work, painted just after the turn of the century, Tuxen captures the silvery blue light Skagen was known for, and shows his talent for delicate color effects and direct painting. Tuxen grew up in Copenhagen, the son of a naval officer and director of the Danish naval shipyard. His older sister Nicoline Tuxen (1847-1931) was a noted still life and flower painter. His early training was highly academic, enabling him to move with facility between and among genres: from 1868 to 1872 he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art together with Peder Severin Krøyer, and in the Paris studio of Léon Bonnat during 1875-1876 and again from 1877-1878. During the 1880s and 90s Tuxen traveled widely painting portraits for Europe's royal families including Christian IX of Denmark, Queen Victoria and the Russian royalty. In 1914 he made a study trip to Greece to paint the entry of George I of Greece into Salonika, for the Christian castle. He made lively and well-characterized portraits, among them his self-portrait in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and portraits of P. S. Krøyer, in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. He also made portraits in sculpture, including a portrait group of Krøyer and Michael Ancher. In the 1880s, Tuxen became the first head of Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler, an art school established to provide an alternative to the more rigid and traditional education offered by the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Laurits Regner Tuxen Kopenhagen 1853 - Kopenhagen 1927 Oil/canvas, 30,5 x 48,5 cm, lo. ri. monogr. a. dat. LT 22, on the stretcher inscribed 'Skagen'. - Danish landscape a. figure painter, one of the main exponents of the Skagen artist's colony. T. studied at the Copenhagen academy under H. Drachmann a. V. Kyhn, thereafter he continued his studies in the studio of L. Bonnat in Paris until 1878. He travelled West Europe a. Russia where he painted portraits of the members of the respective royal houses a. the high nobility. Since 1901 he returned to Skagen every summer. In 1916 he became professor at the Copenhagen academy.
