John Henry Twachtman Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, Etcher, b. 1853 - d. 1902

(b 1853 Cincinnati, Ohio; d 1902) One of the leading American Impressionist painters, Twachtman was born to German immigrant parents in America. He trained in Munich and later in Paris at the Académie Julian, where his classmates included fellow American artists and lifelong friends Frank W. Benson and Childe Hassam. Twachtman's primary subject was nature, particularly the natural or cultivated landscape. Through his art, Twachtman achieved a profound unity of subject and technique. He also established his most lasting legacy, a career that maintained both a mastery of nineteenth-century Impressionism, and a willingness to advance pure painting toward abstraction, hinting at developments to come in the twentieth century. Shortly after Twachtman's death in 1902, Thomas Wilmer Dewing remembered his friend by recognizing in his art "the most modern spirit...too modern, probably, to be recognized or appreciated at present; but his place will be recognized in the future." John Henry Twachtman, American, 1853 to 1902, a Post Impressionist pastel on paper painting depicting a forest landscape. Signed lower right, J.H. Twachtman. Housed in an old gilt wood and gesso frame. Provenance: The estate of Leonard E. Walley, Dallas, TX. Note: Landscape painter John Henry Twachtman was one of the most original and modern artists of the late nineteenth century. Trained in Munich and Paris, and a member of the most advanced American artist groups of his day, John H. Twachtman was at the forefront of the American avant-garde throughout his career. The work of his Greenwich Period, for which he is best known, was influenced by Impressionism and Tonalism, yet Twachtman's stylistic synthesis was unique. Often compared with Claude Monet and James McNeill Whistler, Twachtman developed an experimental technique and explored innovative compositional means to create subtle and poetic images that anticipated directions in twentieth-century abstract painting. JOHN HENRY TWACHTMAN Festiniog (Over the Narrowest Narrow Gauge). Oil on canvas, 1879. 200x250 mm; 8x10 inches. Incised with the artist's signature and date, lower left recto, and inscribed in oil, verso. The current work is an early illustration design by Twachtman (1853-1902), an American painter who became best known for his impressionist landscapes, for Over the Narrowest Narrow Gauge, by William H. Bishop, which appeared in Scribner's Monthly, volume xviii, page 605. Provenance: Private collection, New York. Published: Lisa N. Peters, John Henry Twachtman Catalogue Raisonné, Greenwich Historical Society, 2021 (jhtwachtman.org), number OP.320. The Ffestiniog Railway in Wales runs from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffesiniog on a single track. The line was constructed between 1833 and 1836 to transport raw materials to the port in Porthmadog. The introduction of steam locomotives and passenger carriages in the 1860s allowed the railway to become more efficient and appealing to regional tourism. Operations closed on the line in August 1946, though shortly thereafter, groups have been active in restoration of the railway, slowly reopening each station.
