KAVERIN (ZILBER) VENIAMIN ALEKSANDROVICH (RUSSIAN 1902-1989), author, and TYRSA NIKOLAI ANDREEVICH (RUSSIAN 1887-1942), illustrator, OSADA DVORTSA [Palace Siege], (Moscow-Leningrad: GIZ, 1926). 4to (270 x 185 mm) softcover, 34 pages. Text in Russian. LOT NOTES Andrei Tyrsa was a Russian (Soviet) painter and graphic artist best known as one of the most influential Soviet book illustrators. Between 1905 and 1909 intermittently studied architecture at the Imperial Arts Academy in Petersburg (without graduating), as well as at the private painting school of Elizaveta Zvantseva under Leon Bakst and Mstislav Dobuzhinsky (in 1906-1910). Later taught at the Academy of Arts, the Saint Petersburg Art and Industry Academy (1918-1922) and the Leningrad Institute of Civil Engineers (1924-1942). Tyrsa first became involved in book illustration in 1921. In his late years collaborated with famous sculptor Vera Mukhina at the experimental gild of the Leningrad Mirror Factory on product design of glassware. Exhibited at the Russian Museum (Leningrad, June 1941). In January 1942 Tyrsa was evacuated from the sieged Leningrad to Vologda, where he died a short while later. Veniamin Kaverin was an important Russian (Soviet) author, dramaturgist, and playwright, and member of the Avant-Garde "Serapion Brothers" literary group along such authors as Mikhail Zoshchenko, Viktor Shklovsky and Yevgeny Zamyatin. Began publishing in 1922. While a laureate of the Stalin Prize of the Second Degree, awarded for his adventure novel Two Captains (1940-1945), Kaverin frequently opposed the government throughout his late career: in 1956 became a member of the banned Literaturnaya Moskva almanac, in 1958 refused to condemn Boris Pasternak`s controversial Doctor Zhivago and in 1967 prepared a speech for the Union of Authors of the USSR that he was prohibited from reading. PROVENANCE INFORMATION This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Private collection, Europe. Literature: Tyrsa: New Works, Moscow, Skorpion, 2007, p. 115, cat. 172, illustrated. Nude on Striped Fabric is a beautiful canvas by Nikolai Tyrsa, probably the most joyous of all Leningrad artists. Tyrsa was, in his individual style, the unrivalled master of luminous painting effects, bringing to the Soviet 1930s the "bare" truth of Impressionism. His lively brushwork, sparkling as if still moist, captured dozens of nude beauties, eye-catching and stylistically recognisable. The apparent simplicity and effortlessness of his paintings from life slyly mask a skill which few can match. The complexity of the task the artist has set himself is obvious. This "Leningrad Olympia", reclining in a relaxed pose among bright orange and yellow Finnish fabrics, is exquisite in her dizzying combination of shades. The colour of her bare, sultry body, effectively adorned by the flamboyant textiles, is hardly muted by the tonally cold pale-blue patch of the bed-cover and the almost dark-blue window aperture.

Zhivopis', Grafika, Khudozhestvennoe Steklo, Saint Petersburg, 1992, p. 98, cat. no. 645, listed. Leningrad in the 1920s and 30s was a real Mecca for children's book illustration. Distinctive, colourful children's books publishedthere were in demand all over the USSR. Several generations of Soviet children grew up with the illustrations of Vladimir Lebedev, Alexander Samokhvalov, Alexei Pakhomov, Nikolai Lapshin, Nikolai Tyrsa, Valentin Kurdov and Vladimir Konashevich. When artists were not selling many paintings, and few of them received government commissions to design propaganda material, work on illustrations for periodicals and for other publications was not only a way to earn a living butalso a kind of breathing space to allow creative experimentation, which was hardly touched by the censors. Nikolai Tyrsa, like many of his colleagues, was an active contributor to the children's magazine Ezh (Hedgehog). It is the dynamic and eye-catching cover for the second issue of 1929 which we present in the present catalogue. The illustration was for the story 1000 Travellers, by L. Saveliov and V. Tsaupe. Based on real events, it told how, after the Revolution, around a thousand young lads were sent to the USA with the support of the American government, from famine-struck Petrograd via the Russian Far East. Some of them reached America unscathed and later returned, while others did not make it, tragically dyingon the arduous journey. The artist's daughter, Maria Nikolaevna Tyrsa, recalled that she actually knew some of these boys who had returned. Nikolai Tyrsa himself was so moved by this extraordinary tale that he painted this striking watercolourbased on it.

Zhivopis', Grafika, Khudozhestvennoe Steklo, The State Russian Museum, St Petersburg, 1992. Tyrsa Nikolai Andreevich. Zhivopis', Grafika, Khudozhestvennoe Steklo, St Petersburg, 1992, p. 59, cat. no. 195, listed. Exhibition catalogue, Tyrsa Nikolai Andreevich (1887-1942). Zhivopis'/grafika, Moscow, 2004, cat. no. 54, illustrated. The interior world of the artist, the sphere of his intimate concerns, has always been of interest to viewers, especially when the art is of high calibre, as is that of Nikolai Tyrsa. He painted the current watercolour at the peak of his creative powers. In the mid-1920s Tyrsa left his administrative job as head of the Petrograd VKhUTEMAS and was able to concentrate all his efforts into seeking his own graphic language. At this time, during summer holidays at his dacha in the little town of Taitsy, near Leningrad, he painted a considerable number of lyrical works, dazzling both in the perfection of their technique and in a particular depth and refinement in their crafting. The watercolour Woman Sewing. Dacha in Taitsy is interesting for many reasons. The image, framed by a doorway (a signature compositional trait of this master), offers a view of the interior - a table, a vase of cornflowers (special favourites of Tyrsa), a hat hanging stiff on the wall, part of a bed with a metal frame and checked blanket, patches of sunlight from the window and rooms obscured in shadow - and also of the model, busy with her sewing. The woman at the table is the artist's wife, Elena Alexandrovna Tyrsa (née Leifert) (1898-1980), his favourite model, seen in many of this artist's works, both paintings and graphic art, works which are now held by Russia's state museums and in major private collections around the world. Researchers of Tyrsa's oeuvre ascribe particular significance to this watercolour, which is well-known from many publications and has hung in all major exhibitions of this artist's work.
