TYSON, KEITH 1969 ULVERSTON Title: Parkett Paperweight (for Parkett 71). Date: 2004. Technique: Pebble stone on copper plate, partially painted with enamel. Measurement: 4 x 10 x 10cm. Notation: Signed on enclosed sample sheet. Publisher: Parkett-Verlag, Zurich (publisher). Number: 2/75. Frame/Pedestal: On rubber base. Condition: The work is in very good condition. Each object is unique in its combination of plate, pattern, pebble stone and position. Each piece with signed sample sheet showing the respective design among 100 different possibilities. With Parkett magazine. "Faced with the contradiction inherent in the notion that the infinitude of all possibilities should be grasped by the structures of our minds and, consequently, that the expanding universe is purely an extrapolation of a finite universe, Keith Tyson devises strategies to invent rules. He neither comes up with static 'world pictures' nor with linear sequences of pictures. Instead he seeks completely new rules by which a major player could generate his own worlds." Hans Rudolf Reust, Parkett Nr. 71, 2004. Article on the work and artist from Parkett edition no. 71. Explanations to the Catalogue

Executed in 1997 Provenance : Acquired directly fro the artist Phillips de Pury & Co., New York, Friday, November 16, 2007 [Lot 386] Karl Hutter Fine Art Private collection, Los Angeles British artist Keith Tyson began his earliest career as an apprentice engineer working on nuclear submarines, before he made the leap to art. Systems of logic, scientific methodology, and elements of chance have since continued to inform his intriguing practice, and his diverse artistic output stems from the view that his practice is akin to scientific experimentation. For Tyson, his studio is a laboratory where he uses scientific, philosophical or other modes of enquiry to explore questions of human existence. Northumbrian Chronicle reflects Tyson's interests in systems and machines, and is meant to be installed from the ceiling so that both sides of the work can be seen, so that this work could be seen as either a two-dimensional or a three-dimensional piece.
