Charles Frederick Ulrich American, 1858-1908 Portrait of a Woman with Tea Roses

        Est: $7,000 - $9,000

Charles Frederick Ulrich American, 1858-1908 Portrait of a Woman with Tea Roses Signed Ulrich (ur) Oil on canvas 15 3/4 x 10 inches Provenance: Private collection, FL Private collection, CT After studying in Munich, New York-born Ulrich spent most of his career as an expatriate in Venice, where he fraternized with American artists on their visits to the city, including his friends William Merritt Chase, Robert Blum, and John Twachtman. In this painting, dating from the mid-1880s, Ulrich's sitter is an elegant Venetian; she was also depicted by Blum in Venetian Lace Makers (1886-87, Cincinnati Art Museum). Working in the realist manner of the Munich style of the 1870s, Blum conveyed the refinement of his subject by portraying her in association with tea roses, a cultivated hybrid. The figure's over-size bow of finely woven fabric adds to this image of self-conscious stylish sophistication. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
