    Mar. 18, 2025

Paul Otto Gaddis (1924-2019) Collection, Franklin, Tennessee. Utagawa Toyokuni (Japanese: ????; 1769 in Edo ? 24 February 1825 in Edo)(also often referred to as Toyokuni I to distinguish him from the members of his school who took over his g? (art-name) after he died) was a great master of ukiyo-e, known in particular for his kabuki actor prints. He was the second head of the renowned Utagawa school of Japanese woodblock artists, and was the artist who elevated it to the position of great fame and power it occupied for the rest of the nineteenth century. Toyokuni achieved much of his notable success and widespread recognition when he began crafting portraits and scenes of actors. During that period, kabuki theaters were bustling hubs, and the most renowned actors held a status akin to public icons. Consequently, prints depicting Kabuki actors became highly sought-after commodities. The demand for these prints stemmed from both the theaters, which required advertising materials, and the enthusiastic fans seeking actor portraits. The production of these actor portraits mirrored today's publication of celebrity posters, catering to the fervent fandom surrounding these esteemed performers.
