Provenance: - Private collection, Madrid. The appearance of this work on the market represents an important addition to the pictorial catalogue of Juan de Valdés Leal, one of the most outstanding painters of the Spanish Baroque. This decapitated head of the Baptist can be related to a drawing of the same subject that is preserved in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, one of the few drawings confirmed by his hand, which until now was linked to a similar work of Carmen Calzado in Córdoba. The paintings of the severed heads of saints were a huge success in Sevillian Baroque painting, with such outstanding examples as those made by Sebastián de Llanos Valdés and Valdés Leal himself. The supremacy of colour over drawing, the very personal red tone of the cloak, the white lead glints on the metal of the tray and the knife, the halo barely suggested by a thin and brief curved line and the fluidity of the phylactery, which seems to spill like a waterfall into the tray, speak to us of the mastery that the Sevillian artist had achieved in these years. If in the heads of Saint John and Saint Paul of Carmen Calzado de Córdoba, painted in the years 1655-1656, the workmanship was softer and the palette more luminous, twenty years later Valdés is more crude and concentrated on the essential. Lacking any concession to kindness, this head is a “still life in the divine” that responds to the most austere aspect of the Sevillian baroque spirit.       JUAN DE VALDÉS Virgen del Rosario con el Niño Óleo sobre lienzo al dorso inscrito: "Juan de Valdez".con marco de época de madera tallada, dorada y policromada.Esta obra, que representa a la "Virgen del Rosario con el Niño", fue realizada hacia 1670 y es propia de la etapa de madurez del artista. En ella se observan con claridad sus características de estilo, advirtiéndose especialmente la gran soltura en su pincelada. La viva expresividad que transmite esta pintura, de extraordinaria amabilidad y belleza, aleja a Juan de Valdés Leal de los absurdos tópicos que lo relacionan con temas poco agradables.En una armoniosa composición, la figura de la Virgen sentada y ligeramente inclinada hacia delante, con una aureola de angélicas cabezas infantiles, se contrapone con la del Niño, más liviana y complementada con una serie de graciosos ángeles volanderos en movidos escorzos. Madre e hijo quedan unidos por el rosario, que cobra protagonismo al enlazar sus manos en un eje diagonal. El Niño Jesús, envuelto en una agitada capa de color rojo intenso, aparece en una actitud triunfante con la cruz como emblema de su futura muerte y resurrección.Este tema iconográfico deriva de la devoción al rezo del rosario instituido por Santo Domingo de Guzmán, fundador de la orden de los Predicadores (más conocidos como dominicos), a quien la historia cuenta que se le apareció la Virgen con una guirnalda de rosas pidiéndole que rezara diariamente y divulgara su culto.Al dorso figura una inscripción posiblemente autógrafa, que se considera como la firma del autor.BIBLIOGRAFÍA: Valdivieso, E., Juan de Valdés Leal, El Sacrificio de Isaac, OHL, Madrid, 2013, p. 72, fig. 35.Agradecemos al profesor D.
