SEBASTIÁN LLANOS Y VALDÉS - Adoration of the Shepherds

      Est: -

SEBASTIÁN LLANOS Y VALDÉS Seville c. 1605 - 1677 Adoration of the shepherds Oil on canvas Measures 122 x 181 cm This painting is attributed to the production of the Sevillian painter Sebastián de Llanos y Valdés (h .1605-1677) one of the founders of the Drawing Academy of San Lucas (1660). It is an Adoration of the Shepherds (Luke 2, 15-21) in which the clear protagonist is the Child Jesus. Around him are the shepherds, the Virgin and Saint Joseph on a neutral background. At the back of the painting and with a very dark intonation are the mule and the ox. There are similarities with a contemporary painting from which Llanos y Valdés could have been inspired; by Antonio del Castillo (1616-1668), Nativity, Hispanic Society, New York (fig.1), famous painter in Seville of religious subjects. The production of Llanos y Valdés is directly related to that of Herrera el Viejo (c.1590-1654), but with a more Zurbaran-esque sense that materialized in chiaroscuro and the inclusion of small still lifes, giving the painting a more humanistic sense. In the Spanish seventeenth century, religious-themed painting tried to adopt a more everyday sense to bring the faithful closer. Bibliography: - Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez; Baroque Painting in Spain (1600-1750), Cátedra, Madrid, 2010, p. 273.

SEBASTIAN LLANOS VALDES (ca. 1605-1677). "Head of San Blas". Oil on canvas. It preserves an Andalusian frame from the 18th century.

      Est: €1,000 - €1,200

SEBASTIÁN LLANOS VALDÉS (ca. 1605-1677). "Head of Saint Blaise. Oil on canvas. It conserves an 18th century Andalusian frame. Size: 38 x 46.5 cm; 44 x 53 cm (frame). In this scene of great dramatism, which follows the tenebrist heritage, as for the light expressiveness, the author only shows the face of an old man, with closed eyelids and on his right a knife. This iconographic attribute identifies the figure as Saint Paul. Paul was a Hellenised Jew from the Diaspora, born in Tarsus. He was therefore Jewish by ethnicity, Greek by culture and Roman by nationality. He received the name Saul, which he changed to Paul after his conversion. Born at the beginning of the first century, he studied in Jerusalem under the rabbi Gamaliel, who would have been noted for his hatred of Christians. One day, when he was on his way from Jerusalem to Damascus around the year 35, he was dazzled by lightning and fell from his horse. Then he heard the voice of Jesus saying to him: "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? As a result of this experience, the saint went abruptly from persecutor to zealot of Christianity. After curing the blindness of a Christian from Damascus, he began his life as a missionary until he reached Jerusalem, where he came into contact with Peter and the other apostles. In the Middle Ages numerous corporations were placed under his patronage, due to various aspects of his iconography, life and miracles. However, St. Paul was never a popular saint, which is proof of the relative poverty of his iconography. In fact, his role in art is not commensurate with his importance in the spread of Christianity. In early Christian art, his only attributes are a book or a scroll, and in the 13th century his emblem appears, the sword that was the instrument of his martyrdom. A Spanish Baroque painter, active in Seville and apparently a disciple of Francisco de Herrera the Elder, Sebastián de Llanos Valdés' style shows much influence from Francisco de Zurbarán. He is known to have been Mayor of the Painters' Guild in Seville in 1653 and is assumed (according to contemporary texts) to be well off. He also co-founded the San Lucas Academy of Drawing in 1660, together with Murillo and Herrera el Mozo. His work is preserved in Seville Cathedral, as well as monumental Evangelists in the Casa de Pilatos in the same city.

SEBASTIAN DE LLANOS Y VALDÉS DAS MÄRTYRERHAUPT DES HEILIGEN PAULUS AUF EINEM GOLDENEN TABLETT MIT SCHWERT

      Est: €4,000 - €8,000

SEBASTIAN DE LLANOS Y VALDÉS c. 1605 Seville - 1677 probably Ibid THE MARTYR'S HEAD OF SAINT PAULUS ON A GOLDEN TRAY WITH A SWORD Oil on canvas (old relined). 33,5 x 47 cm (F. 51,5 x 65 cm). Verso: Inscribed on the canvas: 'R. Gasco'. Part. slightly old, soiled surface. Frame. Iconographically, the origin of such depictions, known since the Middle Ages, is based in the head of John the Baptist presented on a plate, in the so-called 'Johannesschüssel'. In the 17th century, the theme became so popular, especially in Spain, that the iconographic scheme was transferred to the beheaded heads of other martyrs (St Paul, St Jacob, St Dionysius, St Fulgentius and others), although, as in the case of St Paul, he was not beheaded at all. In addition to single representations, pendants or larger ensembles, the combination of several heads in one picture composition was also very popular. In older research, such 'martyr heads by Enrico Romero de Torres and José Gestoso y Pérez ... . were mainly associated with Juan de Valdés Leal, although it is now known that many of them were in fact by the older Seville painter Sebastián de Llanos y Valdés (c. 1605-1677).' Cf. on the very interesting complex of topics and the quotation: Weniger, Matthias: Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Bestandskatalog Spanische Malerei. Munich 2012, pp. 140-143. On the provenance of the painting: 1858 Gascó brothers (Madrid) buy the painting from the Gran Galeria of Don Ancieto Bravo in Seville (Don Ancieto was one of the largest and most important art collectors from Seville. His collection comprised about 670 paintings & sketches, including 24 paintings and seven sketches by Murillo and others). In 1908 the painting was exhibited in Zaragoza in the exhibition 'Exposicion Retrospectiva de Arte'. 1929 to 1930: Exhibited in Barcelona 1929-1930. 1936: Expropriated during the civil war in Sena (Zaragoza). 1939-1940: Exhibited in the 'Exposition for Recovery/Return' at the Zaragoza Commodity Exchange. 1940: Returned to the Gascó family, where it was kept until today. Afterwards, Southwest German private collection. SEBASTIAN DE LLANOS Y VALDÉS Um 1605 Sevilla - 1677 wohl ebenda DAS MÄRTYRERHAUPT DES HEILIGEN PAULUS AUF EINEM GOLDENEN TABLETT MIT SCHWERT Öl auf Leinwand (altdoubl.). 33,5 x 47 cm (R. 51,5 x 65 cm). Verso: Auf der Leinwand bezeichnet: 'R. Gasco'. Part. min. altrest., verschmutzte Oberfläche. Rahmen. According to legend, Rufina and her sister Justa were daughters of a potter. After having destroyed a statue of a god in a pagan procession they were arrested by the Roman govenor. Rufina was beheaded and burnt and Justa was drowned in a well. Both martyrs are the patron saints of potters as well as the city of Seville, and have as a result been portrayed by numerous spanish painter including Diego Velázquez and Francisco Goya. Benito Navarrete Prieto has suggested the author of the present painting to be the Seville artist Sebastián de Llanos y Valdés. In 1989 however, Enrique Valdivieso attributed the picture to an artist from the circle of Llanos y Valdés and dated it to 1660. Llanos y Valdés, who was descended from the lower nobility and appears to have been financially independant, studied under Francisco de Herrera before running his own workshop from 1630. This large format painting, in an ornate old frame, may therefore be from a student of the workshop.
