Gillis van Valckenborch, Mountainous Landscape with the Conversion of Paul

      Est: €25,000 - €30,000

Gillis van Valckenborch was born into a famous family of artists. Fourteen renowned painters are recorded in their family history. Of these, Gillis van Valckenborch's father Marten (1535-1612), his brother Frederik van Valkenborch and his uncle Lucas van Valckenborch the Elder achieved the highest renown as painters. Gillis spent most of his career in Germany. Unlike the other painters in the family, he is best known for his large and densely populated compositions depicting scenes from ancient history or mythology. While a large number of landscape drawings attest to his interest in this pictorial genre as well, only a few landscape paintings have been attributed to him. The present work belongs to this smaller group within the artist's oeuvre, which Alexander Wied has attributed based on a compositionally similar "Conversion of Paul" from the Museé Bossuet in Meaux (Wied, op. cit., p. 193).

Öl auf Leinwand. Unten mittig auf der Steinplinthe signiert: Dk: Valckenburg: Fecit. 135 x 178 cm.

Sabin. NOTE Although best known as a painter of game pieces in the tradition of his master Jan Weenix, Valkenburg also worked as a portrait painter, drawing on his initial training under Michiel van Musscher. The present pair of portraits, dated 1714, were almost certainly painted in Amsterdam following the artist's return from Surinam in 1707. The influence of Jan Weenix is clearly visible in the treatment of the classical landscape backdrops, whilst the pose of the lady recurs in another oval portrait by Valkenburg representing Petronelle Merens, today in the Westfries Museum, Hoorn.

    • Dirk van Valkenburg (Amsterdam 1675-1727)
      Jan. 24, 2003

      Dirk van Valkenburg (Amsterdam 1675-1727)

      Est: $60,000 - $80,000

A cat protecting dead game from a dog, elegant figures in an architectural landscape beyond signed and dated 'D;Valkenb. g /Fecit 1717' (lower center) oil on canvas 40 x 311/2 in. (101.6 x 80 cm.) NOTES According to J. van Gool, De Nieuwe Schouburg der Nederlandsche Kuntschilders en Schilderessen, 1742, II, pp. 477-87, the Amsterdam painter Dirk van Valkenburg was the pupil of the celebrated game-piece painter Jan Weenix. After his apprenticeship, Valkenburg never reached his intended destination of Italy because he received important commissions in Germany and Austria from Baron Knebel van Katznell-Enbogen and Prince Adam von Lichtenstein. Back in Holland around 1700 his popularity continued, and William III of Orange commissioned him to decorate Het Loo Palace with hunting canvases. Because of his skilful rendering of plants and animals, he was contracted by Jonas Witsen to work in Surinam, to record the tropical flora and fauna of the Dutch colony. The present lot is one of a small group of signed works by Valkenburg, who was the last great practitioner of the Dutch game-piece. A similar vase with playing putti in feigned relief is depicted in a still life by the artist now in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin (H. Potterton, Dutch Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Paintings in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, 1986, pp. 158-59, fig. 163), as well as in a still life sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 11 November 1996, lot 42 (GLD 138,000=$80,000). The view of the moated chƒteau in the background is fairly typical of the artist's work of the first decade of the eighteenth century and it reappars, for example, in the Dublin picture, and in a signed and dated painting of 1703 in the Museum der Bildenden Knste, Leipzig.
