BIOGRAPHY: Hendrik Valkenburg was a Dutch painter, draftsman and art teacher, was born as the son of bread baker's servant Cornelis Valkenburg and Aaltjen Egberts. He wanted to draw at a young age, but his father preferred that he learn a trade. Valkenburg ended up at a bookshop, but in his spare time he was allowed to take lessons at the Deventer Teekenacademie School with Jacob Jansen Vredenburg. He received a silver pen and silver medal for his work. After the death of his father in 1844, Valkenburg said goodbye to the bookshop and started to focus on painting. In 1848 he continued his education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He painted genre scenes, interiors, landscapes and portraits.Valkenburg established himself in 1854 as an art teacher in Almelo. There he married Jansje van Lochem in 1861. From this marriage, among others, daughter Bertha was born, who would follow in her father's artistic footsteps. Valkenburg was then an art teacher at the RHBS in Helmond (1867-1868) and head of the civil evening school in Zwolle (1868-1872). In 1871, when he was 45, he received the Royal Grant for Free Painting . It enabled him to settle with his family in Amsterdam, where he still taught at the public day and evening school (1873-1874). His pupils included Jan Herman Coster, Jan van Essen, Hendrik Haverman and Jules Eduard Mendes.He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae and exhibited several times. He won, among other things, a bronze medal at an exhibition in Liege (1871) and a gold medal for his painting Even going out at the exhibition of Living Masters in The Hague (1872). He regularly spent the last 14 years of his life in Laren, where he was influenced by Anton Mauve, one of the founders of the Laren School.The painter died more than a month later and was buried in the Nieuwe Oosterbegraafplaats. In Laren, the Sint Janssteeg was renamed Hendrik Valkenburglaantje in 1927.
