EVARISTO VALLE (Gijón, 1873 - 1951). "Washerwomen". Oil on canvas. Relined. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 30,5 x 44,5 cm; 59 x 73 cm (frame). In this work the author presents us a scene extracted from the daily life, conceived from an idealised perspective of the life in the country and the work. Using tones of pleasant colours, the artist creates a landscape in depth in which we can see the sketched figures of women washing and hanging out their clothes. This pictorial conception allows the artist not only to approach the human figure, but also to conceive a concrete view and landscape in which to develop an atmospheric composition. In this work the artist achieves a fleeting instant, an everyday scene endowed with a lyrical content, a joyful and leisurely expressiveness, which lends great dignity to the craft and the figure of the women in the scene. Evaristo Valle was an Asturian painter. At the age of 10 he went to live in San Juan de Puerto Rico, but a few months later he returned to Asturias after the death of his father. After working in a banking house, an oil refinery and a lithography shop, he went to Paris in 1896, where he earned his living as a draughtsman. In 1900 he returned to Spain and decided to devote himself exclusively to painting. When he received a pension from the Gijón Town Council in 1903 he moved back to Paris, from where he returned in 1905. In 1912 his mother died and he shut himself up at home for years, as his agoraphobia became more acute. During this period he wrote plays and novels. In 1919 he published the novel Oves and Isabel. Disappointed by the sales, he threw all his remaining copies into the sea. In 1935 he wrote El Sótano, a dramatic comedy in two acts inspired by the October Revolution of 1934 in Asturias. This work was never published during his lifetime. He died in Gijón in 1951. It is totally impossible to classify him in any pictorial school, since although we can see various influences in his works, they form part of a common framework rather than a specific style. His painting is characterised by a great chromatic richness and a fine sense of humour.

      Est: €13,000 - €15,000

EVARISTO VALLE (Gijón, 1873 - 1951). "Crossing". Oil on canvas. With the seal of the Macarrón Gallery on the back. Signed in the lower left area. Measurements: 31 x 45 cm; 47 x 62 cm (frame). Costumbrismo was a constant resource in Evaristo Valle's painting, albeit from a completely personal perspective which drew directly from his own tradition. For this reason, Asturian society was the source of inspiration for many of his works, its habits and customs were an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the artist who, with paintings such as "Pescadores" (Fishermen) or "Comadres" (Wives), managed to capture the reality of the Spain of the time. In this particular case the artist portrays a voyage where the figures are dominated by the magnificence of the landscape which is developed in all its splendour thanks to a masterly use of colour. Evaristo Valle was an Asturian painter. At the age of ten he went to live in San Juan de Puerto Rico, but a few months later he returned to Asturias after the death of his father. From 1915 onwards he took up painting again, thus consolidating his personal style. His drawings and caricatures were published in Le Rire, El Independiente and El Comercio, of Gijón, and in La Esfera; he also illustrated several books. In 1932 he was awarded a third medal at the National Fine Arts Competition, although he subsequently submitted works without being accepted. However, in 1946 Lafuente Ferrari asked him to write about his biography, which sparked off a very prolific period of artistic creation and a theoretical collaboration between them. In fact, it was Lafuente Ferrari who dedicated these words to the artist: "Evaristo Valle is an exceptional value within the Spanish painting of his time, for his lyricism, for his refined colourism, for the originality of his sense of landscape and humanity". It is totally impossible to classify him in any pictorial school, since although we can see various influences in his works, they form part of a common framework rather than a specific style. His painting stands out for its great chromatic richness and a fine sense of humour. In 1981 the Evaristo Valle Museum Foundation was created in Gijón.
