CORNELIS JONSON VAN CEULEN (LONDON 1583-1664 UTRECHT) Property from a Private Collection CORNELIS JONSON VAN CEULEN (LONDON 1583-1664 UTRECHT) Portrait of a lady oil on canvas 76.5 x 65 cm. (30 x 25 in.) overall framed: 94 x 81 cm. (37 x 33 in.) The sitter bears a resemblance to a member of the Nole family. Provenance With Lane Fine Art, 123 New Bond Street, London Private Collection UK Cornelius Jonson or Cornelius Jonson van Ceulen (and other variants) was born to a family originally from Cologne, who left Antwerp for London around 1568. The artist developed success as a portraitist for the English aristocracy. As evident in the present example, he was particularly detailed in his depiction of intricate materials and clothing. His style was thought to be influenced by the work of Flemish portraitist Daniel Mytens the Elder (Dutch, c. 1590 – 1648 or before), and Sir Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, 1599-1641). After leaving England in later life, Jonson continued to paint in the Netherlands where he joined the Saint Luke’s Guild in Middelburg. After spending some time in Amsterdam he settled in Utrecht, where he lived until his death. Cornelius Johnson van Ceulen is one of the most important English portrait painters of the 17th century, although his family was of Dutch origin and moved across the English Channel for religious reasons. His portraits are countless and mostly depict citizens and courtiers, but there are also portraits of several kings of England, such as Charles I, Charles II and James II. The artist is described by his contemporaries as one of the most talented and prolific portrait painters who worked in England in the 1620s and 1630s. He was particularly accurate in the reproduction of clothing, which made him a virtuoso in this field. The two portraits of children whose identity is still unknown are proof of this. CORNELIUS JOHNSON, PORTRAIT OF EDWARD WALKER, 1649

          Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Cornelius Johnson or Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen (Anglo-Dutch, 1593-1661). Portrait of Sir Edward Walker, Garter Principal King of Arms (British, 1611-1677) - 1649, oil on canvas, apparently unsigned, plaque to frame reading with older attribution label to verso. Bust length painting depicting Sir Edward Walker in a feigned oval cartouche wearing a cambric collar and badge depicting the Most Noble Order of the Garter. Approx. 37.25" x 32.25" (canvas), 29.75" x 24.75" (frame). Note: During the English Civil War, Sir Edward Walker served Charles I in many offices including Clerk Extraordinary of the Privy Council and Secretary for War. Walker was appointed Garter Principal King of Arms in 1645. After the execution of Charles I he followed Charles II into exile also serving as Clerk of his Privy Council at The Hague in 1649. Johnson was appointed "his Majesty's servant in the quality of Picture drawer" in 1632 and he would paint Charles I as well as miniatures of Charles II and James II as children. By 1643 he had fled the Civil War to the Netherlands where he continued to paint locally as well as the court in exile. It is likely that this portrait was painted during Walker's time at the Hague. Works by Johnson are held in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C., National Gallery, London and the British Royal Collection, U.K. Accompanying this lot is a 1938 evaluation by Dr. William Roberts, London, England.

Portrait of a lady, half body, with lace cap and collar, holding a tulip in her left hand, standing in front of a balcony. Canvas. A pair. Old sale numbers on the reverse. Restorations. Lined. Cornelis Jonson Van Ceulen (or Cornelis Johnson in English literature) was born in Londen out of a Flemish-German immigrant family. Little is known about his training, but the influence of the Dutch tradition is unmistakable. Maybe he was an apprentice of the Hague painter Jan Anthonisz. Van Ravesteyn (c. 1572-1657) or of Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt (1566-1641) in Delft. In 1618 (or early 1619) Jonson returned to London, where he quickly gained success as a portrait painter for clients of the highest social ranks. In 1632 he became a court painter to Charles I, just like his contemporaries Daniël Mijtens (1590-caa. 1647), court painter in 1625, and of course Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641), court painter in 1633. After the outbreak of the Civil War in 1643, which meant the end of the royal patronage, Jonson and his family moved to the Northern Netherlands. He ended up in Utrecht, where he continued to work as a successful portrait painter until his death in 1664. Jonsons painted portraits in all sizes: from miniatures and busts to full body and familiy portraits. His models are often showed in the same poses and their heads are framed rather low in the canvas. He pays great attention to detail in his rendition of jewelry and clothing, especially of the lace collars, which were important status symbols for his sitters. Also characteristic is his treatment of eyes, with their large irisses and deep set upper eye lids. A similar pair of portraits representing Apolonius Veth en Cornelia Remoens, monogrammed and dated 1644 can be found in the collection of the Tate Gallery in London (canvas, 77 x 62 cm, inv. nr.
