No reserve lot, property of a Gentleman, estate liquidation. Oil on panel, measurements: 37 x 29. Joos van Cleve (Cleveris?, c. 1485-Antwerp, 1540 or 1541), member of a family of artists, since the surname Cleef is repeated among the painters of Antwerp, it is little what is known about his life and his artistic career. He could have been born in Cleves (Cleve in German, Kleef in Dutch), currently a German city but in the 16th century in the duchy of Cleves, which is part of the Netherlands. He dedicated his career to portraiture and religious painting, sometimes repeating his compositions of variegated figures, backgrounds of Renaissance architecture, and easy sales. The Death of the Virgin from the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne, dated 1515 on its frame and signed with a monogram, served as a starting point for the recognition of his initial style and thus attributing to him the works that until then had been assigned to the Master of the Death of the Virgin. Since 1524, with The Lamentation at the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt, there is a shift in his painting towards Italian models, although there is no documentary evidence of any trip to that country. It is possible, however, that he did so in France, where according to Guicciardini he was called by Francis I to work as a portraitist at court. Between 1528 and 1535 Joos van Cleve does not appear in the records of the guild of Saint Luke, a period that he may have actually spent in France, from where he perhaps traveled to England to portray Henry VIII, at this time numerous portraits are attributed to him, always of a sober nature. . In Spain he is represented in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, which houses two of his works: a Self-portrait painted around 1519, and a Child of the Passion on the Globe, from around 1530. In the Prado Museum a Portrait of old man from the royal collection, which was attributed to Hans Holbein the Younger, whose work Cleve was able to see in England, and a Savior of the World of dubious attribution, which repeats a model from the Louvre Museum. In Gran Canaria, specifically in the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, the Snow Triptych is attributed to him. JOOS Circle by VAN CLEVE (Trier, ca. 1485 - Antwerp, 1540 or 1541). "Saint Jerome in his Study". Oil on oak panel. It has repainting. In need of restoration. Measurements: 65 x 86 cm; 73 x 95 cm (frame). The present canvas presents a typical iconography of the 17th century, whose protagonist is Saint Jerome. He became very popular during the Counter-Reformation, due to his repentance and contemplative life, useful values to move the faithful. It is a devotional portrait, set against a neutral background that allows the main subject to be centralised. The long bust of the saint can be seen, scantily clad in a red cloak, with his head bent down contemplating a skull, which is placed on the blank papers, alluding to the saint's work as a translator. He is also touching the skull with his hand, one of the most representative attributes of the saint. Saint Jerome is one of the four great Doctors of the Latin Church, born near Aquileia (Italy) in 347. Trained in Rome, he was an accomplished rhetorician and polyglot. Baptised at the age of nineteen, between 375 and 378 he withdrew to the Syrian desert to lead an anchorite's life. He returned to Rome in 382 and became a collaborator of Pope Damasus. In the second half of the 16th century a new iconography emerged in which the saint listens to the trumpet of the Apocalypse, an iconography widely used by the Counter-Reformation Church. The distinguished saint is usually depicted inside a cave or in the middle of the desert, and is usually, though not always, accompanied by his characteristic attributes: the stone symbolising the rigour of penance, with which he beats his chest; the skull, symbolising death; and the red cloak, which reflects the tradition that made him a cardinal. The accumulation of books and parchments next to the saint alludes to the saint's translation of the Bible into Latin, which since the Council of Trent has been considered the only official translation. Finally, the theme of St Jerome hearing the trumpet of the Last Judgement became fashionable in Counter-Reformation Europe, and gradually took hold, displacing earlier interpretations of the saint as a sage or penitent. Joos Van Cleeve was presumably born in Kleve and moved to Bruges in the early 16th century due to the influence of this school on his style, later moving to Antwerp where he enrolled as a master in the city's Guild of Saint Luke. Various pupils of his workshop are known. He is also thought to have been at court in France in 1529 or 1535 and is thought to have travelled to Italy and London. Until a monogram was discovered and identified with the master, his works were attributed to the Master of the Death of the Virgin due to the triptych (now in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Cologne) on which the signature was discovered. His style reveals influences from a variety of sources, including iconographic ideas of Jan van Eyck and Robert Campin, themes and techniques of Leonardo da Vinci, etc. His work is preserved only in a few important private collections around the world and in institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Museum in Warsaw, the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, the Louvre in Paris, the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels, the National Gallery in Prague, etc.

Penitent Jerome in his study. Antwerp. Mid 16th century. Oil on panel. Provenance: Madrid, sighted in 1914 Private collection Heverlee Restored in 1914 in Madrid and in 1982 in Brussels by Mr. Masson. This iconic composition with the Penitent Jerome in his study room is usually linked to the studio of Joos van Cleve. Nevertheless, notes by M. J. Friedländer show that he attributed a variant to 'Hemessen od[er] Massis,' indicating the artists Jan Sanders van Hemessen (c. 1500-1556/57) and Quinten Massijs I (1455/65-1530) (cf. RKDimages 42328). The possible prototype of this composition is/was in a private collection in Milan (Modono) (cf. RKDimages 42327). Whereas in earlier variants the background consists of an interior with a view of a vast landscape in the window, in the present version it is occupied by a red curtain. The muscular figure of Hieronymus and the magnified movement with his left hand, situate this painting during the heyday of Antwerp Mannerism. Beschrijving NL Boetvaardige Hiëronymus in studievertrek. Antwerpen. Midden 16de eeuw.

MANNER OF JOOS VAN CLEVE (CLEVE C. 1485-C. 1540 ANTWERP) Property from a private collection. MANNER OF JOOS VAN CLEVE (CLEVE C. 1485-C. 1540 ANTWERP) Saint Jerome in His Study oil on panel 31.5 x 24 cm Joos van Cleve painted several images of Saint Jerome, the present panel draws close comparison to the composition "Saint Jerome in His Study by Joos van Cleve," Record of the Art Museum, held by Princeton University 49, no. 2 (1990). Jerome translated Greek and Hebrew biblical texts into the standard Latin versions that eventually formed the Vulgate. This melancholy attitude, and his gesture toward the skull suggest that he emulated Albrecht Dürer’s Saint Jerome panel of 1521. The skull presents the specter of death, and the motto homo bvlla (“Man is a bubble”) a motif of mortality. Joos van Cleve painted a picture of Saint Jerome in his study surrounded by objects and is associated with more than a dozen versions of this image. Grasping his head, Jerome points at a skull, beside him is a snuffed-out candle; reminders of the passage of time. The present composition is derived from Albrecht Durer's Saint Jerome painted for Ruy Fernández de Almeida, Ambassador of King John III of Portugal, in Antwerp in 1521, now in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon. Copies and versions exist by artists such as Quentin Matsys and notably Joos van Cleve. see: John Oliver Hand, "Saint Jerome in His Study by Joos van Cleve," Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 49, no. 2 (1990): p. 2-10, pp. 2–3, figs. 1–3; p. 7, fig. 7.

Joos van Cleve: Madonna of the Cherries

        Est: €20,000 - €30,000

CLEVE, JOOS VAN ca. 1485 Cleves - 1541 Antwerp Workshop/Circle Title: Madonna of the Cherries. Date: Ca. 1540-1550. Technique: Oil on wood. Measurement: 45,5 x 31 cm. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Separated from the viewer by a railing, a mother gazes lovingly at her child and hands him cherries. This could be an everyday scene from the 16th century, if certain elements did not indicate that it was the Virgin Mary and Jesus. The cherries lying on the parapet and offered by the mother to the child are, by their heart-shaped form and colour, a symbol of Christ's love and his blood shed on the cross. The cherry, juicy and sweet, is also an allusion to the fruit of the tree of Eden, which led to the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. The rose also has the double meaning of the blood shed on the cross but at the same time of God's goodness and the grace he bestows on man. Finally, the green parrot that the child holds in his right hand is another Christian symbol: the animal is often used as a symbol for the Annunciation of the Archangel Gabriel to Mary because, according to one tradition, the parrot could say the Ave because of its ability to speak, which would connect it to the Annunciation. This, then, is a small-format painting peppered with symbols that the 16th-century viewer could effortlessly decipher, whereas they are more difficult to contextualise in the eyes of modern people. The author of this magnificent depiction of the Madonna and Child is to be found in the workshop or under in the circle of Joos (or Joost) van Cleve. Van Cleve was one of the most important artists of the Antwerp School, mainly active in the years 1515-1530. He is best known for his portraits and paintings with religious themes: his works were in great demand for public and private devotion. Some of his Madonnas with Child bear a strong resemblance to the present painting, which can therefore be assumed to date from around 1540-1550. It seems that at least two artists were involved in the execution of this painting, or at least there were two phases of execution, since microscopic analysis revealed non-negligible differences in the way the yellow pigment was applied. It is likely that a very experienced painter from the workshop of Joos van Cleve painted the Madonna while the child is the work of a pupil or another artist who took over the work (perhaps due to the death of the first painter). Infrared reflectography revealed an underlying drawing of a dry, dark-coloured material depicting Adam and Eve with the seductive serpent. Eve stands in a landscape and takes an apple from the snake with her right hand; in her left hand she holds a second apple. Adam sits in front of her and stretches out his right arm towards Eve. The x-ray revealed that the composition with Adam and Eve was not painted in oil while the Madonna and the child were painted separately without significant pentimenti. Identifying the underlying drawing reveals a very common practice of reusing material, where the initial idea was abandoned and the material was reused afterwards to save money. Curiously, the two subjects, original sin and the Madonna handing the cherries to the child, are closely linked by the symbolism of the fruits - apple and cherries - which allude to sin and the redemption of man through the sacrifice of the Son of God. The painting was examined at the Technische Schule Köln using various non-destructive methods of analysis to gain a better understanding of the materials and techniques used, as well as its condition: Stereomicroscopy, Infrared reflectography (Osiris, 900-1700nm) in 2018, UV light examination and X-ray (Seifert ERESCO 150KV/0.5mA / Examion CR 3X-pro) XRF analysis (Niton XLt). The examination report, prepared in Cologne on 10.03.2020, is available. We are grateful to Suzanne Laemers, RKD, The Hague, and Maryan Ainsworth, New York, for their kind assistance in cataloguing the present painting. Explanations to the Catalogue

Oil on panel, measurements: 37 x 29. Joos van Cleve (Cleveris?, c. 1485-Antwerp, 1540 or 1541), a member of a family of artists, since the surname Cleef is repeated among Antwerp painters, is little what is known about his life and his artistic career. He could have been born in Cleves (Cleve in German, Kleef in Dutch), now a German city but in the 16th century in the Duchy of Cleves, which is part of the Netherlands. He devoted his career to portraiture and religious painting, at times repeating his compositions of motley figures, backgrounds of Renaissance architecture, and easy sale. The Death of the Virgin of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne, dated in its frame in 1515 and signed with a monogram, It served as a starting point for recognizing his initial style and thus attributing to him the works that until then had been assigned to the Master of the Death of the Virgin. From 1524, with The Lamentation of the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt, there is a noticeable shift in his painting towards Italianate models, although there is no documentary evidence of any trip to that country. It is possible, instead, that he went to France, where according to Guicciardini he was called by Francis I to work as a court portraitist. Between 1528 and 1535 Joos van Cleve does not appear in the records of the guild of San Lucas, a period that could have effectively passed in France, from where he may have traveled to England to portray Henry VIII, attributing numerous portraits to him at this time, always of a sober nature. . In Spain he is represented in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, which houses two of his works: a Self-Portrait painted around 1519, and a Child of the Passion on the globe of the world, from around 1530. In the Prado Museum a Portrait of old man from the royal collection, which was attributed to Hans Holbein the Younger, whose work Cleve was able to see in England, and a Savior of the World of dubious attribution, which repeats a model from the Louvre Museum. In Gran Canaria, specifically in the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Snows, the Triptych of the Snows is attributed to him. DIE HEILIGE FAMILIE Öl auf Holz. Parkettiert. 50 x 37 cm. In vergoldetem Rahmen. Literatur: Vgl. John Oliver Hand, Joos van Cleve. The early and mature paintings, Princeton University 1978, S.159-299, Nr. 33, Abb. 41. Vgl. Ludwig Baldass, Joos van Cleve. Notes: The model for this wonderfully intimate composition is a group of paintings that have survived by Joos van Cleve and his workshop. The painting held at the National Gallery in London (inv. no. 2603), which is only a little smaller than the painting on offer for sale here, has the unique foreshortened hand of the Virgin, which is however already missing from all known copies.
