Biography from RichardNortonGallery.com:Franklin Van Court was born Franklin V. Brown, in Chicago in 1903. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. In New York, his teachers were esteemed artists Charles Hawthorn and Robert Henri and in Chicago, Frederick Grant and Anthony Angarola. These instructors shaped Van Court's urban vision, for which he is best known. Later in life, Van Court experimented with Abstraction. He was a member of the prestigious Chicago Society of Artists and exhibited at the Art Institute and the Union League Club. Van Court won prizes at the Union League Club in 1929 and in 1931 at the Chicago Society of Artists' exhibitions. In 1933, his paintings were exhibited at a Whitney Museum of American Art show in New York by Chicago artists that also featured the famous Grant Wood painting "American Gothic". He lived his adult life in the same Hyde Park house that he grew up in and died there in 1997.

      Franklin Van Court (IL, b. 1903), Three Works including a pair of abstracts, oil pastel on paper, both signed and dated in pencil at lower right "F. Van Court '33" (SS 9.75 x 7.5 in.; DOA 18.25 x 16 in.); the third a mixed media on paper, monogrammed and dated "V. C. '34" at upper right (SS 9.75 x 7.5 in.; DOA 18.25 x 16 in.). All three in matching mats and silver tone frames. Franklin Van Court was born in Chicago and studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He continued his studies at the National Academy of Design in New York and with several other prominent artists, including Charles W. Hawthorn, Frederick Grant, Robert Henri, and Anthony Angarola. He exhibited throughout the US and these three works are accompanied by an archive of letters from exhibition venues including California Palace of the Legion of Honor, Kroch's Bookstores, Inc. in Chicago, the Union League Club of Chicago, the Ann Arbor Art Association, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Not examined out of the frames.

      c.1933; oil/board, 14" x 17.5", signed and titled verso. Chicago modernist painter. Van Court studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design. He was a member of the Chicago Society of Artists, and exhibited at the Union League Club (1929), and at the Chicago Society of Artists (1931). The Federal Building was a popular subject for the painters of the time because of the importance of the event and the dramatic, modern architecture.
