For magazines like Avenue and De Katholieke Illustratie, he travelled all over the world, resulting in thousands of photographs. Unlike many fellow photographers, Van der Elsken did not fade into the background. He actively engaged with the people in front of his camera and presented himself, accompanied by colourful, self-spoken commentary. In his exploration, lovers, children, acquaintances, artists, and people from the streets, from Paris to Tokyo, from Edam to Calcutta, were compellingly and charmingly drawn along. Artist Biography: Ed van der Elsken (1925 - 1990) was a Dutch photographer known for his gritty photographs of the culture of post WWII Europe. His photographs often include street photography of young people and the counter-culture from 1945 to the 1970s. He has published several books of his photography including 'Love on the Left Bank', 'Jazz', and 'Eye Love You'. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Metropolitan Museum in Tokyo, Museum Boerhaave in Leiden, and the Stadsarchief in Amsterdam.
