Während der hellenistischen Periode breitete sein Kult sich nach Griechenland und von dort nach Italien aus. Sein Symbol war der Phallus. In Lampsakos wurden ihm Esel, die in der Antike als Symbol der Wollust galten, geopfert. Die gegenseitige Vorzeichnung von Lambert Lombard befindet sich im Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. -- Prachtvoller, herrlich präziser und kräftiger Druck mit sehr feinem Rändchen um die Einfassungslinie. Leichte Mittelfalte und vertikale Falzspuren verso, unauffällig ausgebesserte Läsur in einer weiblichen Figur rechts des Gottes, vereinzelt punktuelle winzige Ausbesserungen verso, Leimspuren verso, sonst atdellos schönes Exemplar. Hohe Krone. -- -- Die Darstellung eines Gleichnisses über die geistige Blindheit und schlechte religiöse Führung wird von lateinischen und französischen Texten begleitet und mahnt: führt der Blinde einen Blinden, fallen beide in den Graben. Während Latein die Sprache der Gebildeten in ganz Europa war, war Französisch in den damaligen südlichen Niederlanden weit verbreitet, was darauf hindeutet, dass dieser Druck sowohl für ein gelehrtes als auch für ein breites Publikum gedacht war - letzteres eine Devise des Verlegers Hieronymus Cocks. Ob die Erfindung tatsächlich auf Hieronymus Bosch zurückzuführen ist, bleibt ungewiss. Möglicherweise handelt es auch um eine Vorlage Pieter Bruegels, der sich von einer Idee Boschs inspiriert zeigte (vgl. eine inhatlich identische Darstellung des Motivs, ebenfalls von van der Heyden nach Bruegel ausgeführt, Orenstein, New Hollstein A14). -- Ganz ausgezeichneter, feinzeichnender Frühdruck noch mit der Adresse von Hieronymus Cock, mit sehr feinem Rändchen um die Einfassungslinie. Minimal nur angestaubt, unmerkliches Rostfleckchen auf dem Mantel des noch stehenden Blinden, verso unauffällig geglättete Mittelfalte, dünne Stelle teils in den Linien des Wasserzeichens sowie winzige kurze Bruchstelle ebenda, schwache Gebrauchsspuren, sonst in sehr schöner Erhaltung. Provenance: Collection Prof. Dr. Thomas Olbricht, Essen. The Seven Deadly Sins consist of seven individual sheets: Avaritia (greed), Desidia (sloth), Gula (gluttony), Invidia (envy), Ira (wrath), Superbia (pride) and Luxuria (inordinate desire or lust). Pieter Brueghel the Elder drew the series in 1558 before designing the series of the Seven Virtues a few years later, which was published by Philippe Galle. The paper bears the double-headed eagle as a watermark. For the still young artist, the drawings formed an important basis for his fame and later success as a painter. In addition, they brought him a secure source of income when engraved as prints, so that he was able to find his own style, which was continued by his sons after his death. After he set off for Italy in 1552, he found a publisher in the Antwerp-based Hieronymus Cock, who distributed the drawings as copper engravings in larger editions. The everyday violence in the form of the Inquisition or executions in the run-up to the war of the Netherlands for independence from the Spanish crown is reflected in the series shown here. The imaginative and grotesque figures are strongly reminiscent of his predecessor Hieronymus Bosch.

With an inept captain, mutiny inevitably occurs and the journey descends into drunkenness and chaos.In this image, a fool steers a boat of singing revellers absorbed with music-making and frivolous pursuits, oblivious of their ship's course, which is close to running aground. The fool holds some cherries symbolizing lust, whilst the jugs are an indication of the group's drunken state. For Bosch the ship represents a world populated by fools who pursue selfish and sinful acts without a thought for the consequences.In medieval religious iconography the ship was regarded as a Christian symbol. In a sea of vice and sin, God's ship will pass through the floods to arrive in Paradise. Bosch was a staunch Catholic and obsessed with the struggle between good and evil and the terrors of Hell. He sought to highlight man's folly in a humorous way which would have resonated with a contemporary audience.The engraver, Pieter van der Heyden, was a Flemish printmaker known for his reproductive engravings after works by leading Flemish artists such as Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. He used the monogram PME, the initials of his Latinized name, Peter Mercinus.
