Overall Size: 13 x 16 in. Provenance: Private California Collection. This composition in black and white, a remarkable fusion of painting and drawing, is usually described as a pen-painting (after the Dutch penschilderij). Adriaen van Salm was in 1706 as a draftsman member of the Delft Guild of Saint Luke . The Dordrecht Museum further mentions the particularity that the artist was also a schoolteacher and later draper. Salm was the father and teacher of the artist Roelof van Salm, who wielded the same technique and, like his father, especially ships and naval battles depicted.
