CHARLES PIERRE VAN DER STAPPEN (Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, Belgium,1843 - Brussels, 1910). "Study for the Monument to Labour", 1909. Bronze. Signed and dated. Exhibitions: "European sculpture in the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014. Size: 38 x 47 x 23 cm. This bronze sculpture is part of the realist line of Charles Pierre Van der Stappen. It is a partial study of the ambitious project at the end of his life dedicated to work (similar to those of Meunier i Dalou), which he never completed. It is possibly an allegory of agriculture. Charles Pierre Van Der Stappen studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels (1859-1868) and completed his training in Paris, Florence and Rome. His works span a wide range: from Academicism and Realism to Art Nouveau (in fact, his best known work is a chrysoelephantine sculpture called The Mysterious Sphinx). In 1893, he collaborated with Constantin Meunier on the project for the 52 outdoor statues of the Brussels Botanical Garden.

Charles van der STAPPEN Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, 1843 - Bruxelles, 1910 Le trésor caché Bronze à patine brune, fonte ancienne, signée et datée 'Ch Van der Stappen / - 1900' sur la terrasse Marque du fondeur 'A. VAN AERSCHOT' au verso Hauteur : 36,50 cm (14,17 in.) Estimation 12 000 - 15 000 €
