      Mar. 30, 2023

ATTRIBUTED TO CATHARINA VAN HEMESSEN (ANTWERP, C. 1527/1528 - AFTER 1578)

      Est: €60,000 - €80,000

Attributed to Catharina van Hemessen (Antwerp, c. 1527/1528 - after 1578) "St Jerome" Oil on panel. The remains of a signature clearly show the last letters “..NA” It is preserved in its original carved and polychromed wooden frame. Cradled. 43.5 x 36 cm. Our painting is clearly related to the "Saint Jerome in Prayer" painted by the artist's father, Master Jan Sanders van Hemessen (Hemiksen, 1500 - Haarlem, circa 1565) with whom Catharina used to paint, and which is kept in the Musei di Strada Nuova - Palazzo Rosso (inv. PR 69). We also observe undeniable similarities in the Tendilla Altarpiece, dated circa 1550, which is part of the Cincinnati Art Museum collection, made by Jan and Catharina van Hemessen and workshop, in which the model used for the Saint Francis of the predella has the same physiognomy.  It is precisely to Catharina that the paintings of the central body and the aforementioned predella are attributed. Catharina studied with her father and, like him, came under the protection of the Queen Regent of the Netherlands, Mary of Hungary, sister of Emperor Charles V. In 1556, Mary of Hungary renounced the regency and, together with her husband and his court, settled in Spain. Catharina and her husband, Christian de Morien, the Antwerp Cathedral organist, accompanied the Regent to Spain, staying until the Queen died in 1558. Ten signed and dated works of Catharina are known, some of which are small portraits, including her own self-portrait depicting her at the easel and dated 1548 - the first known female self-portrait, kept in the Basel Art Museum. Her work is also represented at the Hermitage Museum, the National Gallery in London and the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne. Reference bibliography: - Hemessen, Jan Sanders van.
