DER HEILIGE HIERONYMUS BÜSSEND VOR EINEM KREUZ IN EINER GROTTE Öl auf Eichenholz. Parkettiert. 114 x 85 cm. (1221403) (11) Lambert van Noort, 1520 Amersfoort – 1571 Antwerp, attributed The biographer Karel van Mander (1548-1606) mentioned the painter Lambrecht van Oort. He was accepted as master into the Guild of Saint Luke in 1547. THE PENITENT SAINT JEROME IN FRONT OF A CROSS IN A GROTTO Oil on oak panel. Parquetted. 114 x 85 cm. In magnificent Italian aedicule frame with fluted pilasters either side and decoratively painted base and architrave. Classic composition with the figure of the saint at the centre kneeling to the right.

      Est: $10,000 - $15,000

THE WAY TO CALVARY measurements note 281 by 247mm; 11 by 9 3/4 in bears pencil inscriptions, verso: Lambert van Noort / Disc van Frans Floris / Geboren Amersfoort Ao 1530/ + 1595 pen and brown ink and blue-grey wash over black chalk PROVENANCE bears stamp, verso (L.2731) signifying that the drawing was sold at public auction in Leipzig, probably during the 19th century NOTE This drawing may have been part of a series depicting episodes from the Passion, possibly made as designs for painted glass panels. A signed drawing of The Crucifixion, extremely similar to this in style and dimensions and probably from the same series, was sold, Amsterdam Sotheby's, 21 November 1989, lot 1. A substantial proportion of the relatively few drawings known drawings by Van Noort are studies for glass panels or roundels, and the artist also designed some of the famous series of windows produced for the Sint Janskerk, Gouda, from 1551 onwards.

The Nativity oil on panel 61 5/8 x 453/4 in. (156.5 x 116.2 cm.) NOTES We are grateful to Nicole Dacos for proposing the attribution on the basis of photographs. She points out that the figure on the right appears to be a portrait, possibly of a donor. Lambert van Noort was most likely apprenticed in the studios of Jan van Scorel in Utrecht and Lambert Lombard in LiŠge. By 1549 he was listed as a master in the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp, where he remained for the rest of his life, apart from a visit to Italy in 1558-9. He was particularly involved with drawing designs for stained glass windows and decorative objects and his paintings consequently rarely appear on the market - although the last example, a Saint Jerome was sold, Sotheby's, London, 13 December 2001, lot 112 (œ130,000). In both that work and the present the Italianizing influence of Van Scorel (as well perhaps as that of his own travels) is clearly evident, particularly in the landscape backgrounds.
