Louis Van Oeyen Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1865 - d. 1946

Louis Van Oeyen was born to Scottish immigrants on January 17, 1865 in Dayton, Ohio. Little is known about his childhood or education. He married Edith C. MacDonald in 1886, and the couple would later have daughters Edith Lillian and Helen. After a varied career that included a brief stint as a sign writer in Detroit, Mr. Van Oeyen and his family returned to his home state of Ohio, where shortly after opening his own photographic studio, he joined the Cleveland Press as a staff photographer. His successful career began on a catastrophic note, photographing the Cleveland water tunnel disaster of 1901. He also photographed important local news events like the Cleveland railcar strike of 1908 and sight of the Graf Zeppelin hovering over Cleveland's Terminal Tower in August 1929.

At the time, sports photography was practically nonexistent, and the few attempts to photograph sporting events left much to be desire in terms of clarity and quality. Mr. Van Oeyen made it a professional crusade to change that by taking striking images of boxing and hockey matches, football games, and auto and horse races. During the years prior to the Great Depression, America was enjoying unprecedented growth and prosperity, and Americans became enthusiastic sports spectators. This is when baseball truly became "America's pastime," and players like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and Lou Gehrig were showered with public adoration. Mr. Van Oeyen's baseball images cemented his reputation as the premier sports photographer. He pioneered game action photography with the use of new 'stop action' lenses that did not require subject posing. He successfully captured infield plays or runners sliding into bases with great precision. One of his most famous photos was the classic "Close Play at the Plate" that provided the viewer with a virtual experience of the heart-stopping action, complete with a cloud of dust. He also benefited greatly from the use of an Optipod, which enabled Mr. Van Oeyen to swing his camera to capture an action shot without having to move the tripod.

By the mid-1920s, Mr. Van Oeyen was unquestionably Cleveland's most celebrated sports photographer. In addition to his duties at the Cleveland Press, he also began taking taking photographs for the Newspaper Enterprise Association, a Scripps-owned nationally syndicated organization. He remained active until the late 1930s and closed out his career on a high note, photographing the coronation of Great Britain's King George VI for the Western Reserve Historical Society (WRHS) in 1937. Eighty-one-year-old Louis Van Oeyen died in Cleveland, Ohio on December 12, 1946. While his name may not be remembered, his contributions to sports photography will never be forgotten.

1930s Van Oeyen Jimmie Foxx Original Photograph

        Est: -

Hired as the first-ever staff photographer for the Cleveland Press (on the merit of his impromptu coverage of President McKinley's assassination), Louis Van Oeyen went on the capture countless diamond images that have been forever admired by baseball enthusiasts and shutterbugs, alike. Here offered is a Van Oeyen original: a 7-1/4" x 9" black-and-white likeness of Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx. The telling likeness reveals Foxx in his Philadelphia A's road ensemble sometime between 1932 and 1936. Basking in the sunlight, Foxx's handsome face is partially protected by the bill of his cap - whose solid color dates the photo to the above-mentioned time frame. The item shows minimally EX/MT quality, with sharp edges and corners and an image area completely void of flaws. On the reverse, a "L. VAN OEYEN - PHOTOGRAPHER" stamping is accompanied by a penciled notation of "Jimmie Foxx - 1st Base - Phila Athletics - May /3/." (Note, while it might appear to be "31" year indicator, the details of Foxx's uniform negate that possibility.)

[ Sporting Memorabilia ] " Truly Exceptional Oversized 1905 Cleveland Naps Team Photograph by Van Oeyen. From one of the true pioneers of baseball photography, and likewise one of its greatest practitioners, comes this simply monumental work that will thrill all from the casual enthusiast to the most discerning of collectors. With the varied attributes of the piece each competing for praise and celebration, it is hard to know where to begin, but perhaps a brief word about the photographer himself is a proper place to start. Louis Van Oeyen rose from staff photographer of the Cleveland Press in the opening years of the twentieth century and later rose to prominence as the official photographer of the American League, documenting almost all of the greats of the first fifty years of the 1900's in his artful and distinctive style. Any Van Oeyen work carries a significant premium among baseball photography collectors, particularly those bearing his personal stamp on verso, as this treasure does. Secondly, we must point to the heroic proportions of this century-old print, slightly greater than 10x14" in size. The tremendous difficulty and expense in creating a piece of this magnitude in these early days made such a production an extremely rare occurrence. One can safely surmise that this piece was gifted to a very important figure, and our reasoning to suspect that it was an investor in the team will be addressed as we flip the photograph over to study the back. Here we find a handwritten note in pencil from an unknown author. In its entirety, it reads, "Atlanta, GA, 1905, Dear Sir, The Players that are numbered are those who are now playing with the Cleveland American League Ball Club. The others having been sold or released to other clubs. 1 Hess, 2 Congalton, 3 Townsend, 4 Flick, 5 Eells, 6 Turner, 7 Rossman, 8 Bemis, 9 Jackson, 10 Bay, 11 Barbeau, 12 Clark, 14 Stovall, 15 Rhoads, 16 Joss, 17 Lajoie, 18 Bernhard, 19 Bradley." We could certainly be wrong, but the care taken in identifying only those players still active on the roster, combined with the magnitude of the piece, seems to support our hypothesis that the presentee had some sort of new financial interest in the club. Finally, and most notably, we come to the image itself, which stands as the absolute embodiment of the gruff and grizzled Dead Ball era. These are not prep school boys. There is an almost menacing air in this gang of immigrants' sons bundled against the cold in matching pea coats as they wait impatiently for Van Oeyen to finish his work. Addie Joss and Nap Lajoie, standing front and center, appear in simply flawless contrast and registration, as do the balance of this rough looking crew. To compare this work to the stark and powerful images that made Dorothea Lange's 1930's Dust Bowl series a national treasure would not be entirely unjustified. Certainly the line that separates photojournalism from "art" has evaporated in this case as well, and as such this remarkable piece would find a fitting home in both a museum of sporting artifacts and a gallery of fine photographic works. Condition: Only upon quite close inspection will one spot the occasional occurrence of a minor edge tear or light wrinkling. Photograph presents as NRMT."
