JOAQUIN VANCELLS VIETA (Barcelona, 1866 - 1942). "Biblical scene". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. With inscription on the back. In need of restoration. Measurements: 170 x 400 cm. 175 x 405 cm. (frame). Joaquim Vancells studied drawing and painting at the Círculo Artístico de Terrassa. Soon his work receives the influence of the landscapes of Joaquín Vayreda, of his chromatic harmony and his lyricism. He continued his training at the Escuela de la Lonja in Barcelona, but soon abandoned his studies to devote himself to plein air painting as an autodidact. In 1881 he presented a landscape at the Sala Parés, and that same year he received an honorary mention at the Fine Arts Exhibition in Barcelona. In 1894 he obtained a second medal, and first in 1896. Founding member of the Artistic Circle of Sant Lluc, he painted the landscapes of two soffits of the presbytery of Montserrat. His favorite subject was the Catalan landscape, especially the mountain of Sant Llorenç de Munt and the forests of Llavaneres. His work is characterized by the confluence of an academicist technical correctness with symbolist melancholy. He is currently represented in the Museum of Montserrat, the Municipal Museum of Terrassa and the Caixa Terrassa collection, among others. In need of restoration.

Measurements: 36 x 49 cm; 48 x 61 cm (frame). Joaquim Vancells studied drawing and painting at the Artistic Circle of Terrassa. His work was soon influenced by the landscapes of Joaquín Vayreda, his chromatic harmony and lyricism. He continued his training at the Escuela de la Lonja in Barcelona, but soon abandoned his studies to devote himself to plein air painting as a self-taught artist. Condition: The painting is in good restored condition. In the upper half and in the area of the edges retouches can be found. The surface shows craquelure in the area of the sky and was newly varnished. The edges show a revolving paper mount. The frame slightly bumped on the reverse. The dimensions of the canvas are 68 x 100 cm. The frame measures 95 x 126.5 cm. Josep Cusachs (1851-1908) Born in France, Josep Cusachs spends most of his life in the regions of Catalonia. In 1865, he started his military career at the Academia Militar de Artillería. In 1882 he applied for a posting in the rank of commander to dedicate himself to painting. However, military motives are a focus within his subject. Especially the cavalry, due to his love of horses, can be found often in his works. In 1887, Queen Maria Cristina purchased at the Madrid exhibition ‘En el campo de maniobras’, a painting of this subject. He occasionally deals with religious themes. As a portraitist, he created effigies of King Alfonso XIII, and General Juan Prim. In his later years landscapes he specialized in equestrian motifs. The landscapes of its paintings were often executed by other artists. Joaquim Vancells Vieta (1866-1908) As a representative of Spanish modernism, Joaquim Vancells Vieta ranks as one of the most prominent landscape painters of this time. He dealt with decorative arts and the design of furniture. In addition, he promoted the conservation of the architectural heritage of Terrassa. However, he is known for his depictions of shady forests, coasts lines and fog shrouded landscapes. His work ‘Febero’ from the year 1891, now in the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña in Barcelona, impressively demonstrates the skills of Vieta as a painter of this subject.
